You probably need to specify whether you're dealing with a BL 4.6 phone or one with an older BL, whether you have any issues with using the 1.1.4 latest iPhone software, and whether you want to unlock or just jailbreak/activate. It seems like the current standard answer is that iPlus 2.0b is the best choice for unlocking phones with 4.6 on them, because it has the ability to upgrade back to 4.6, although I'm just researching this now (for a phone that's due next week from the AT&T refurb deal). Of course, there is also this issue of everyone claiming everyone stole everything from everyone else, which I'm honestly kind of ignoring, because everyone seems to have their own variant of the drama.

I am getting the same refurb deal as you!

I have now idea how to tell what bootloader it has on it.

Seems like it will probably come with 1.1.1 on it

I need to Unlock it. Thanks!

1.1.1 is the firmware, not the bootloader. But you're right, if all these iPhones are fairly old, then it's quite possible that we'll all have pre-4.6 BL's anyway and all this will become academic.

One of our members just put up a fairly nice guide that explains what is meant by bootloader and baseband and firmware. The unlock guide is all about using ZiPhone, and doesn't discuss iNdependence at all, but it'll at least get you up to speed on the terminology.

Great read! Thanks!

Looks like a week 44 or earlier will save some trouble.

Yeah, sort of. Basically, there's no explicit benefit that I know of from using BL4.6 instead of 3.9... it's just that people are somewhat wary of the unknown -- downgrading when upgrading back is not possible, and the possibility that Apple could know use this to know that you hacked your iPhone and reject a warranty request....
