Zoom for Macbook with OS 10.8.5? Help please!

Searching for a Zoom version for this - can't seem to find if one exists.

Any help much appreciated! Working from home under lockdown which seems to be indefinite...as I say, any help from more knowledgeable people will be much appreciated! Thanks.

Thanks for that. However....
In principle Zoom are telling me that OS 10.7 or later is fine - but they only seem to be offering for 10.10 or later, something I can't quite get my head round. Can't seem to find anything for before version 10.10.......frustrating.

When I try to run the downloaded app it's telling me that the version I'm downloading s for OS 10.10 or later. Doesn't seem to be any other option for versions prior to that, despite their own website saying it's compatible for 10.7 and later.

Their website doesn't seem to be very helpful or informative tbh.

They've sneakily hidden a 'Join in Browser' option that appears after you tried to download twice. I guess that might work in the most modern browser that 10.8 supports (which I guess is a version of Firefox?)

I'm not sure which Mac supports 10.8 as the latest version though? Can you upgrade to at least 10.9 maybe?

Yep! my company are adopting Zoom simply because its the thing to do now (Google Hangouts was working perfectly good before) - hope they'll change course when this news spreads. Not sure on Hangouts' privacy situation having said that

I wouldn't be surprised if Zoom's system requirements are just wrong—10.7 was supported at some point, but has since been dropped, and they never updated their system requirements. In that vein, you might try combing through the Internet Archive to find the latest version that works on 10.8.

Fwiw, I'm currently running Zoom on 10.9, and it works fine, so you don't need 10.10. But the app's info.plist also says 10.9 is the minimum.

I don't think that finding an older version of Zoom will be worthwhile:

Beginning May 30, 2020, all Zoom clients must be on 5.0+ in order to join any meeting, as GCM Encryption will be fully enabled for all Zoom meetings...

If you need to use Zoom, and your sytem is too old for the current version 5, then you might be able to use the web connect option, but I think it would be a better result by upgrading to a newer system.
Your 2012 MBPro can upgrade to Catalina, but you should also upgrade your RAM, and also an SSD for a boot drive would be a wonderful way to show what kind of performance a 2012 Mac is still capable of.
And, I agree, Yosemite would be OK, too... It's not too challenging to upgrade directly to Yosemite

^ Noting again that the latest version of Zoom works on 10.9, so there's no reason to upgrade past 10.9 (Mavericks, not Yosemite) for Zoom specifically.

The only thing you will miss out on is Zoom's silly "virtual backgrounds" feature, which requires at least 10.13.

Yeah, having been someone who rushed to install Catalina when it first came out, I wouldn’t recommend it unless you need it. Maybe update to 10.9, I think a 2012 can handle 10.13, I don’t see any need for Catalina.

I suggested Yosemite, as it is easier to find, and can still be downloaded directly from Apple, even if you have never used Yosemite in the past. No such "upgrade to Mavericks" page (with links to download) exists now for Mavericks, which can only be download direct from Apple if you have previously "purchased" Mavericks through the App Store. (I suppose Mavericks might be available through a developer account, but I don't have access to developer downloads)

Yosemite is indeed easier to get a hold of, the problem is it's also among the worst releases of OS X. It's slow and buggy compared to what came both before and after, and the UI has particularly low contrast, leaving everything harder to read—I'm not a fan of the flat look in general, but Apple at least refined it significantly in El Capitan.

I would recommend literally any version above Yosemite. At least Catalina, for all its very many faults, has the advantage of being officially supported by Apple atm.

If you are having trouble finding Mavericks specifically, I can provide access to a DMG that can be restored to a USB in disk utility to create a bootable installer. I do promise it's unmodified (beyond using createinstallmedia to generate the DMG—there's no such thing as an "untouched" Mavericks installer from somewhere other than the Mac App store), although I realize there's a risk there.

It's not silly to those of use who need onscreen privacy of our home environment for safety reasons. Also, there are lots of interesting ways to use them in online classes, and to break up the cognitive intensity of online meetings and events with a bit of light relief...

Perhaps "silly" was the wrong word—it's a luxury. If you really need it, then you'll need to upgrade all the way to High Sierra. The feature requires decent-ish hardware too.

I'm just really glad Zoom works, and if they have to cut a few features, that's understandable IMO. The feature also requires moderately good hardware, so there's a decent chance a lot of the people on older OS's would be left out anyway.

Actually, you can make Virtual Backgrounds work even on 10.9 if you set up a green screen. This isn't quite as onerous as it sounds, I know teachers who have used painter's tape + green construction paper and they say it's great.

Have you found solution on how to run Zoom on 10.8.5? If you did please tell me how. I am currently in 8th grade and doing my school from home & I really need a solution so I can attend my Zooms on my iMac. I am currently using my Chromebook that the school gave me for the year, and it's so small, it's like 10 inches. Again, if you found a solution please tell me how.

Now that Chromium Legacy exists and works well, I would recommend using that alongside the web version of Zoom. https://forums.macrumors.com/threads/chromium-legacy-google-chrome-for-os-x-10-7-10-9.2283612/

Haven't tried it with Zoom because I'm on 10.9 and the app works natively, but it should absolutely work. I use Chromium Legacy to make calls in Slack and Microsoft Teams.
