Ok, I'm a relatively new convert to the Mac world. This week I saw a Zune for the first time as they only recently came to Canada. Wow, that thing is ugly!!!!

It is however indicative of what ails Microsoft. Even when they have a market leader to copy, or even better exceed, they come up with something that looks like it was designed by committee in Russia. I flicked through the menu choices a bit just to see what it looked like but I was already clearly underwhelmed.

What Microsoft has always lacked, but is now coming home to roost is innovation. Vista copies a lot of what OSX has, and the Zune is uniquely bad on its own. How can a company like that spend billions on a product and come up with something so bad? That goes for Vista and the Zune. Not only a lack of innovation, but certainly a lack of accountability. There didn't seem to be one person strong enough to state out loud at the Zune product meetings "Hey, this is a piece of crap" Steve Jobs gets a lot of flack for telling employees just that, but it obviously works. Who is the person at Microsoft that can say those words. I recently saw an article where Bill Gates expresses his frustration at trying to download a MS product.

Thats ok though, I'm happy with my Apple purchases, and don't ever intend on going back. I would be worried if I was a MSFT shareholder.

i dont know how many time I said it, how exactly can you be so proud of "innovation" when large amount of OSX codes are blatant copy of UNIX and BSD?

Tell me what apple invented.

About ZUNE, I have one, better than iPod for me, it actually does FM radio...

MacOS X is not a copy of UNIX, it is UNIX. It is one of the few certified UNIX 03 ports on the market.

Tell me what apple invented.

The FM transistor radio has been around for a very long time. In the 21st Century, it hardly counts as innovation.

I spent a few years at Microsoft starting in late 2000. I was in a meeting one afternoon where the presenter had a near-final copy of Windows XP installed on his laptop. When he plugged it into the projector, nearly everyone in the room made jokes about XP's "Fisher-Price" theme. One guy even went as far as saying out loud, "I can't believe we're gonna ship that crap!"

Another guy I worked with used a Palm device as his PIM. When asked why, he would proclaim that, "Windows CE is one of the worst pieces of technology ever dumped on mankind."

These are just a couple examples of dissent I witnessed over the years. It's not that Microsoft engineers don't have an opinion. It's that making too much noise might be considered a lack of passion for Microsoft and its products. Management hates that ****.

ha, I didn't say FM radio is "innovation", I just said its useful to me than iPod

MacOSX is UNIX...... that doesn't change anything about "copy codes from UNIX/BSD", does it? :)

FireWire, yes! M$ didn't copy that, I guess?

Maybe you should try work at apple for sometime and post some comparisons.... :D

I hope those are two different thoughts....because innovative things like (iPhone, USB to become the standard, OS X, iPod, etc) while they aren't new products, that are innovative.

What makes Apple so innovative is the fact that they're not scared to ship products that look different and feel different than the mainstream. It's not about this and that new technology (although they have done their fair share of development in that segment). It's about the interface, the way everything works together.

Companies copy/emulate one another all the time. The end result varies, including legality.

As for products released by Apple and MS, they each have different philosophies on how to go about things. MS wants to make something generic to sell to everyone. Apple tends to like industrial design and simplicity. Hence Apple's increasing market-share.

Buy what you like. It's the only message that can actually get through. ;) :)

As for the people leaving MS, prefer to see this as potential. New blood, management that listens to engineers and customers, could help steer MS into a better position.

Now just dump Steve Ballmer, and they may have a chance. :p
