Hey so i've been doing time machine backups for a while but when i connected my drive for a backup a couple weeks ago it just said "not enough space on the backup drive" which was weird as the size it was quating was basically a full disk backup again which i assumed time machine never does...
How does Time machine work?
I have a Time machine backup of my old system before I formatted and reinstalled the OS and everything.
I want to keep a copy of the latest backup from previous backups and set up a new Time machine for the current setup.
This is what's in the previous Time machine...
I purchased a Samsung T5 portable SSD for time machine. When I went to go use it, I selected encrypted backups. I received the following error:
There was an error preparing the Time Machine backup disk "Untitled".
The given disk is in use by a driver.
I found other mentions of this issue...
Hello and thanks for your help!
I have a Mac Pro and work off an external RAID 5 array. I would like to backup the RAID array onto an external hardrive to have a copy in a remote location. I am unable to do this in time machine. Suggestions?
THanks! Catherine
I have Time Machine backups going to a 3TB hard drive. I also have stored many other files there.
Recently the 3TB drive filled up. To create space for more of those "other" files, I decided to delete some of the oldest backups. I moved them to the Trash, then tried to Empty the Trash.
That...
Hi guys!
A while ago I got a 2005 Mac Mini G4, and the seller threw in an external hard drive/FireWire+USB hub. I believe it's this model: http://www.mymac.com/2006/04/ministack-v2-review/
I recently set it up and tried using it to back up my Mac Mini running Mac OS X Server, but noticed the...
Hi —
I have a new iMac running High Sierra and I want to load it with the entire contents of my vintage 2009 MacBook Pro, from a Time Machine backup. But NOT from the latest backup; I want to select an earlier one from maybe a year ago, because I think the MacBook is infected with malware...
Hello everyoneת
First of all sorry for posting so much in the past few days - new mac so a lot of questions .
I'm waiting for my new 2019 iMac to arrive and thinking what is the best way for migrating .
I have a 2011 iMac ,backed up to time machine so it seems like the logical way but I'm...
i'm just doing my first time machine backup to a dedicated backup drive, its got nearly 8TB to do, i don't fancy leaving my mac on for about 5 days straight, is it possible to turn it off each night and Time machine will pick up where it left off?
Thanks
past few days my MacBook Pro (Retina, 13-inch, Early 2015) running mojave 10.14.3 has been slow and overheating. i then realized a new os version came out and maybe i needed to update. i tried to update and my mac has run out of storage (4 GB free disk space remaining) and my system was taking...
Been juggling a few different backup solutions in my home, limping by on scattered USB drives and an old Time Capsule that we've outgrown. Don't want to spend the money on a full NAS like a QNAP, thought it might be cheaper to trick out an old USB3 RAID enclosure to handle Time Machine backups...

My Time Machine backup stopped doing automatic backups. If I start a manual backup, it works fine, and it schedules the next backup. But when the time comes, nothing happens. It does not even try to do a backup. I am using Yosemite (10.10.5) on a late 2013 iMac. I have tried deselecting and...
I know that this is going to be long, but I have a multitude of problems with my Mac Mini, and I have no idea what to do. Should I try to fix this mess of spaghetti, or manually back everything up on a fresh external drive, format the drive and start over? Or is there something else I can do...
Hey all,
I’ve reurposed my old 2011 MBP as a home “server” to run iTunes etc, and it’d also be nice if I could use it to share a drive for a Time Machine network share.
I’ve tried sharing both a whole disk and a folder on it, with the TM option set in the shares “advanced” dialog, and tried...
I've got a 1TB external hard drive that I use as both my time machine backup and external storage, being new to macOS I didn't realise that OS creates snapshots rather than add to the initial backup I think.
My question is what is the easiest way to trim all the old snapshots and just have the...
So for a general use spinning rust drive, higher RPM means lower latency, but it used to be the case that 5400rpm drives used higher density platters, and thus could actually give better speed for sustained sequential activity.
My intended use for this specific drive (actually pair of drives...
Hi,
I have 2 MBPs. One from 2018 with Mojave and one from 2014 with Sierra.
For both I backup to a Synology NAS, using TimeMachine. Previously both were running Sierra and backup-ing was no problem. Life was good ;)
I updated the 2018 MBP to Mojave in December 2018. Everything worked like a...
Is it OK to change the name of a boot disk that time machine is backing up? I had been backing up a disk called Boot, did a clean install on a new disk named Macintosh HD and migrated my data from the old disk. Can I just add "Macintosh HD" to time machine prefs for backup and continue using the...
I know that people have asked this sort of question before, but I've always found it geared specifically for their own equipment, rather than in a general sense. How do users out there attach an encrypted drive to a network, be it a hard drive or raid, be it attached via ethernet or via a USB...
