I have followed MacVidCard's instructions to change the boot.efi file in the recovery partition, however, no matter what I do, I can't get the machine to boot from the recovery partition.

I have a MacPro 1,1 with updated BIOS to 2,1 running El Capitan 10.11.1. I've been working with this stuff since the original Tiamo and other boot loaders were available, so this isn't rocket science for me, either. I did an install from a MacBookPro running a current version of El Capitan by booting the MacPro into Target disk mode and installing over an existing installation of Yosemite. I booted off another drive so I could replace the boot.efi files as required and the base OS installation works fine.

Any suggestions would be appreciated. I have to believe I'm missing something here.

Attached is what I just did to the latest ElCap Recovery HD (thanks for reminding me that I needed to replace the stock boot.efi from my latest install) in a Yosemite 10.10.5 Terminal.

How are you trying to get into the Recovery environment?

If you are like me, multiple Recovery HDs prevent a successful boot into such via Command+R, so you need to boot with the Option key held, then select Recovery-10.11.0/1 to enter it.

My Pike boot.efi keeps getting replaced by the Apple one. I heard about an app that reinstalls the Pike boot every time that you restart. Does anybody know what I'm talking about and where to find it?

Just by the way it is flickering i know there must be something very wrong. Please help!

Quick update on my experience running El Cap on a MP 1,1, 8 core, Radeon 290x. With lots of great help from posts here, I successfully got 11.3 running on one of my drives, with the only notable issue being screen artifacts, presumably due to issues between the OS and my Radeon card. I wasn't willing to dive into Clover to change frame buffering etc., but did ultimately find success with the decidedly low-tech procedure of switching my main display (ASUS 26") from 1080p to i and back to p again, each time I turned on the machine in that OS. 11.4 upgrade went OK with pikify and resolved the video card artifacts; however, it has a dreadful issue with the Finder consistently blowing up on a Cntl-right click on a file/folder. Not good! So, since I haven't yet decided to roll back to 11.3, I'm back in 10.5, which works perfectly with everything. I'll keep researching and if I find a solution--one always seems forthcoming on this incredible machine!--I'll make the move to El Cap. My thanks again to the brilliant assistance of many folks here on this board!

do what i did and remove all drives except your target disk and put the usb booster in a rear usb port and then restart.

if there is no other bootable drive it will start from the usb.

see here in another thread

Boot from Yosemite, get Kext Utility (google it) and put it in your Utilities folder cause it's handy to have.
Now, open Utilities where your Kext Utility icon is, open Finder to your El Capitan partition and go to: /System/Library
Grab the folder of Extensions and drop it on the icon of Kext Utility.

This worked for me when I installed Logitech Control Center for my mouse Performance MX, had an ACPI error too.
So this might be your solution ;)

I hope this helps.

can someone advise about flashing a radeon 5770 from a mac running 10.10.5. likely the forum exists, but i have not yet found it.

has anyone made a list of compatibility issues with pc cards and either flash instructions and other related issues?

Anyone know if El Cap 10.11.6 will work with the Mac Pro 1,1?
I had an SSD working great for about a year running El Cap, unknown version, then the SSD failed. I backed it up, got a new one, installed El Cap 10.11.6 (the only version I can find now) replaced the boot.efi files but I cannot get it to boot.

When set to boot from 10.7.5:
sudo systemsetup -getstartupdisk
/System/Library/CoreServices

But, when set to boot from the SSD, I get:
sudo systemsetup -getstartupdisk
/Volumes/SSD/WINNT

This just doesn't seem right to me. Why WINNT rather than the .../coreservices/ dir?

But boot info is:
finderinfo[0]: 1464038 => Blessed System Folder is /Volumes/SSD/System/Library/CoreServices
finderinfo[1]: 1889087 => Blessed System File is /Volumes/SSD/System/Library/CoreServices/boot.efi
finderinfo[2]: 0 => Open-folder linked list empty
finderinfo[3]: 0 => No alternate OS blessed file/folder
finderinfo[4]: 0 => Unused field unset
finderinfo[5]: 1464038 => OS X blessed folder is /Volumes/SSD/System/Library/CoreServices
64-bit VSDB volume id: 0x365E2A9951837737

One thing I noticed is that when I listed the attributes of the original boot files from the installer, I got:
-rw-r--r--@ 1 root wheel 604728 Apr 23 07:12 boot.efi
After replacing them I got:
-rw-r--r-- 1 root wheel 313344 Apr 24 06:13 boot.efi
Notice the lack of "@" I'm not really sure what that means, if anything. I'm very familiar with the terminal but never paid any attention to that @.

I'm interested if someone with El Cap working on a 1,1 gets the same results from sudo systemsetup -getstartupdisk.

I also have my BU of the original SSD although some system files failed to copy.
Does anyone know what file would contain the version of the OS that it was running.

Any help is much appreciated.

Note, the first time I set up this SSD it was a breeze. Now, I can't get it to work at all.

I forgot to mention that after I replaced the video card I have no boot screen until the OS loads. It's just black screen then grey, then the login screen, nothing prior. So, I can't use the option boot chooser because I can't see it. I flashed the card but it just won't work.

Yes! With the new Pikey v14 I'm back up and running.

I wasted my vacation and worked on this thing for a week. I finally found the Pikify v14 post and was back up and running in a few hours. Why did it take me so long to find that post?

That Pikify makes it so easy it's awesome.

BTW, after using the Pikify v14:
sudo systemsetup -getstartupdisk
/System/Library/CoreServices

I was right, the result of WINNT is wrong.

Although, the @ that appeared in ls -la appears to make no difference.

Are you saying I can get a boot screen?
I'm revisiting this nightmare after installing usb overdrive and losing my boot-ability from the SSD again. I saw this post about the video card boot screen. I'm looking through your posts but I don't see it. Can you point me in the right direction? Thanks.

You might try to set up a fresh user account and try there. If error is gone, something is wrongly installed in your current account. If errors come up also on the fresh user acc., you might have deleted/corrupted something (installing macOS might be the solution then).

Oh, I see. Not a single pref pane can be opened...
Are the systems file permissions ok?
unfortunately, no. i tried to fix it via ONYX, but no results. the point is, that i can't reinstall the os yet. even, i treid to create a new user via terminal ... nothing. i have to finish my musical project. if i change the system, i have to reinstall my DAW and all the software plugins ... it'll cost me too long time. :oops: :oops: :oops:

Do you have an older working clone or TM backup that could be revived?
If so, then re-importing user settings from your current setup via migration assistant could do the trick. It will also import the audio plugin kexts etc.

What kernel build do you have, btw.? Can you say since when this behaviour happened or what might have caused it?

unfortunately, no ... the TM hdd controller's corrupted ... and the kernel version is:
System Version: OS X 10.11.6 (15G31)
Kernel Version: Darwin 15.6.0

That´s tons of bad luck altogether.
One last chance: Get a (defective) drive on ebay, exact same type as your HDD and transplant the controller board to get your data back. Done that in serious data loss cases, it´s very easy to do...
Info: You can get latest build 15G22010 (incl. all security patches) up and running if you preserve the kernel and copy that back to the right location. And with the tool "lockrattler" you also see that even today (!) Apple rolls out further security updates under the hood... but that´s after you get your machine working right again. ;-)
