I'd be interested to know if anyone has managed to upgrade a 1.02 "dev team method" unlocked phone to 1.1.1 and in the process used ISPF to fix their baseband?
I did. I unlocked with the terminal method and never upgraded to 1.1.1. I then reflashed my baseband with he original 1.0.2 firmware and than ran the iphonesimfree without my sim installed and than upgraded to 1.1.1 with no problem. This was bedore the announcement today.
Really? I have done the same thing, but was not sure if i could just install IPSF and run it, then upgrade right to 1.1.1

I have an iunlock'd iphone with 1.0.2 on it and modem firmware 03.14.08_G and wish to upgrade and unlock the phone...
How do I do that? how do I activate the phone so it will work?
Do I need to understand the hacker jailbreak method released yesterday and is there an activation method already? Will I lose all my contacts and media if I go through the process? Thanks.

Can somebody explain what, exactly, the difference is between iphonesimfree's method and those used by the iphone dev. team? IPSF says that their method doesn't patch the firmware - so what does it do and how does it do it? Why is it resistant to the firmware updates?

does this mean, u can go to an apple store, pick up a phone, unlock it, jailbreak it and what not and use any other sim that is not AT&T on the iphone or does this just allow u to run 3rd party applications on your iphone for now

Today I ordered over internet the commercial Software iphone-sim-free 1.6.
Now the question is how to go on ?
Nust I update first to 1.1.1 so that my iphone is like new again and then start hacking, or can I start now ?

Soon enough there will be an easy way to jailbreak and activate the phone then you can upgrade the firmware.
As for IPSF I e-mailed them asking how they fix the iunlock/anysim problem and how to upgrade the firmware and I will let everyone know what they say when they reply!

I didn't make it clear that I was able to upgrade but the phone could only be used with AT&T on 1.1.1. THis was not a big deal to me since I decided to stay with AT&T and canceled by tmobile account.
I would say to wait a few more days to allow things to settle down, and a more polished way to Jailbreak and Unlock to come out. I read through the current Jailbreak system, and while I *think* I can do it, I do not want to risk it yet.
So I for one will sit out a few more days, read some more posts, and hope for a more user-friendly version to come out.
I'm in the same situation. As far as I can tell, you have 3 options.
1. Reflash the "locked" baseband onto your phone, then re-unlock with IPSF, then upgrade, jailbreak, activate, etc. This will require you to use the command-line to do some of the fiddling. I'd suggest this if you are capable and _NEED_ 1.1.1 now.
2. Just upgrade the phone (thus "bricking" it), and then jailbreak, etc, and then run IPSF on 1.1.1. Probably simpler, but personally I'd rather not go this way, as "damaging" the phone in this way (even temporarily) scares me. Plus if you are able to do the jailbreak/activate at this stage, you are probably capable of doing the re-flash in option 1 anyway.
3. Wait. The tools to jailbreak and activate 1.1.1 are sparkling fresh and not well honed yet. In a few days, they will probably be much more developed and easier to use. In addition, there's always the chance that a free solution will come out that is able to do the "permanent-unlock" like IPSF. This is the best option. If you've been patient on 1.0.2 these last few weeks, try to be patient a few days more at least until it settles down and easy/established methods of everything are determined.

Please do some research around the web because there might be extra steps you might need to take to get everything working for you. This worked for me but YMMV. Now the warning....
WARNING - WARNING - WARNING - THIS MAY NOT WORK FOR YOU!!! YOU MAY STILL HAVE A BRICKED PHONE. I ACCEPT NO RESPONSIBILITY FOR THESE INSTRUCTIONS NOR THE STATE OF YOUR HANDSET
OK if you want to take this route then this is what you need to do next...
1) Upgrade to 1.1.1. This WILL brick your phone. (Now your baseband will be v4 )
2) Downgrade back to 1.02 (I won't post links but try the iphone dev team site on how to do this)
3) Power down your phone and REMOVE your sim
4) Power up with the sim removed and Install SimFree.app 1.6 (simplest method is through apptapp installer)
5) Run SimFree and then this should "fix" your baseband - correcting any damage done when you unlocked originally)
6) Update back to 1.1.1 via itunes
7) Jailbreak your 1.1.1 iphone using the newly found methods (again the iphone dev team site can help)
8) Activate the phone.
9) Done.
Good Luck. Personally I'd wait to see what happens with the automated solutions and let these updates mature a bit. But if you are impatient then let me know how you got on!

I also want to ask you about when you downgrade back to 1.0.2 - Don't you have to jailbreak and activate it again BEFORE you can install IPSF? or does the original activation/jailbreak remain there?

I've been able to upgrade to 1.1.1 via the IPSF unlock method. The question now is how do I get YouTube and Installer.app?

And it was NOT even because I was trying to update windows!
bloody wininstaller crashed and put me into restore mode!
SO....
I am going to have a go at upgrading and downgrading and unlocking all again and fingers crossed it will ALL work and if it doesnt well then Ill be annoyed but anyway we will see what happens!
Its gonna be a LONG night!
