The m4r thru iToner isnt working for me. I did just what everyone else did, & it does the same vibrate but no sound at all.

rename audio file to *.m4r
add to itoner
sync
assign to person

When they call, nothing. Any suggestions??

Just to clarify, the file must be an m4a file first, then you simply rename the file so that the extension is .m4r. This worked for all of my custom ringtones. Check the file by using "Get Info" to make sure the extension has been changed properly (not ringtone.m4r.m4a).

PS Try the ringtone in Settings instead of waiting for someone to call

Iphone firmware 1.1.3 & iToner

I had to import my song (mp3) into iTunes, then convert it to ACC format. Then view the song in Finder, Copy and Paste it to my desktop screen. Go to Info and rename the extension from .m4a to .m4r then save it. Then drop it into iToner and re-sync it and all is great.

A bit of mucking around but it gets the job done.

Hope this helps some.

Make sure you convert the audio file to AAC before you change it to m4r. Then add it to iToner and sync. It worked for me.

iToner Fix

This is the response I received from Ambrosia about the newest iPhone update breaking iToner.

"We are aware of the problem, and our programmers are looking into a solution now.

In the meantime I have a workaround that should get your ringtones to play again.

1. Launch iToner and connect your iPhone
2. Use iToner to remove any existing ringtones.
3. Import any of your ringtones into iTunes if they are not already there.
4. Select your ringtone in iTunes and choose "Convert Selection to AAC" from the Advanced menu. (if this option in the Advanced menu says "Convert Selection to [any other format], then open iTunes preferences, click on Advanced, then Import. Then change the "Import using" menu option to AAC. After this the item in the Advanced menu will refer to AAC.
5. Drag this converted file to your Desktop.
5. In the Finder, change the file extension from ".m4a" to ".m4r". Select the file and then go to the File menu to Get Info. Change the file extension to m4r. You should get a dialog box confirming the change. Change the filename for this file only (you will have to do that for each ringtone, but if you go ahead and say yes to using m4r for all aac files, all of your audio files will be converted to ringtone format).
6. You can now use iToner to sync the ringtone back over.

Let me know if you have any problems at all."

I have decided to wait on an iToner "fix" from Ambrosia. I know that they are working on it so I'd rather just sit and wait :)

that method worked for me, but the update knocked out all of my ringers. I'm sure they are part of the "other" that is shown in itunes in the dark orange.

Again, the method getting ringers on the phone to play:

convert mp3 to acc through itunes or whatever program you use. (.m4a)
find the file info and rename the file to m4r
add the file to itoner and sync

It works for me, and at first it didnt because i had like 4 files that didnt work and tried freeiphoneringtones program as well and didnt work.

GOOD LUCK!!! now if someone can fine a way to change the gui sounds like lock, unlock, sms, email and voicemail...

thanks man, works great!

Good Bye iToner

I'm becoming disenchanted with iToner. Every iPhone update seems to break it. I realize that Ambrosia responds with a fix after each update that breaks it but I'm beginning to think that it's not worth the trouble (for me).
I may have to relent and just pay for iTunes double charged ring tones. Perhaps I won't get charged again for tunes I've already purchased and wish to turn them into ring tones. Does anyone know?

Ambrosia will not issue refunds or credits (towards other software) for iToner. Because it is not working (with iPhone update 1.1.3) without the user taking numerous steps I will not be using it anymore. Because of the stance they've chosen to take I'm reluctant to buy any more software from Ambrosia

I got my ringtones back...

the file has to be unprotected (no m4p's) - has to be an m4a or mp3. If it is an m4p, you can always do the burn to CD & re-import trick. That's what I've been doing. I still use iToner to sync to the phone and it works fine with my newly created ringtones. I'm perfectly happy with how it works now (with the workaround).

I'm just going to wait to update to 1.1.3 until iToner is working with the phone.

Don't hold your breath. Unless you're willing to complete 6 steps (according to Ambrosia) it's not going to happen. My suggestion is to not update to 1.1.3 or forget about using iToner for ring tones. I chose door number 2.

their website says that they're working on full compatibility. the 6 step instructions are just a workaround method to get your ringtones onto your iPhone until they fix it.

i understand your frustration though. i dont want to do work just to get ringtones on my iPhone. thats not why i bought it. im waiting for the new iToner version but my patience is going down.

Well, I can't very well blame Ambrosia for Apple's update breaking it. Apple codes the way they wish without regard for any applications that they themselves do not produce. I think that the fact that they have updated iToner for free for past users and that they are nice enough to let us know 1.) that they are, in fact, working to fix the problem, and 2.) a way to make do until they get it right give me enough confidence in the company to be patient.

If the situation is the same in two months, then I might complain, but I'm sure they're taking this seriously and working hard to fix it.

On top of that, the 6-step process is a good bit shorter if you already have the ringtone made (then just convert - if necessary- and rename).

I can't bring myself to blame Apple either, since they can't be expected to take into consideration every third-party app related to iTunes or the iPhone, especially those that undermine their profits.

I didn't get the impression, based on an email response, that they are working on full compatibility. Evan Smith said:
"We are working to make the process easier due to Apple's change"
I interpreted that to mean that the 6 step process outlined may be easier as a result of whatever it is Ambrosia is "working" on. Like maybe 3 steps instead of 6.

I don't blame Ambrosia or Apple for this latest incompatibility issue. I just expect to get what I paid for.

Like you, I purchased iToner for it's simplicity in transferring ring tones to my iPhone. There are so many other methods, which don't cost a dime, I could use if I didn't mind the hassle of following multi steps or using other complicated procedures. I'd like to say that my patience is wearing thin but the truth is that, after receiving email responses from Ambrosia, I have none left. My frustration was exacerbated by Ambrosia's position.

It seems that someone could put together some kind of script to do steps 4-6, which is where the real work is. I know nothing about programming (I'm a linguist), but it seems like something that even automator might be able to do...

Not sure who is interested in doing this but I place the sole responsibility (of making sure their software works as advertised) on the publisher/developer.

I must admit it is a disappointment that after all this time this has not been fixed yet. Also a mass email to paying customers informing them of what is going on would be welcome. :(

I hope something is done soon. The m4r convert worked for some of the ringtones, but not all of my tones work. Ambrosia is usually pretty quick with a fix so I am guessing they ran into a wall in finding a fix. Maybe they are also trying to give us the ability to change sms tones with the next update... just hoping, but that would be awesome.
