Update: Mine's now working. After repeatedly plugging my recovery mode-ed iPhone into the computer and receiving the "iTunes can't contact the update server message" it finally realised it could. It then proceded to upgrade the firmware, which took a while but rebooted and is now working without a problem.

If you're still having problems, my advice is to wait until theres less load on Apple's servers and you may have better luck.

Battery

Im having a different problem all together, maybe its not a problem, but i have had my phone on standby for about two days and usage at about 5 or so hours, and my battery icon showed no usage what so ever. Then i plug it in for the update it says its still fully charged, but after the update it discharged to 25%. What is up with that?

I downloaded the firmware backed up my phone, everything went well. It said slide to unlock so i ejected it and pulled it out. It imeaditly went to the connect to itunes message, so i pluged it back in and then it said to set it up as a new iphone. I enter my info and it says that my sim is broken please go get a new one. I just used it 30 seconds before so I know it isn't broken. I then forced it into recovery mode and restored. Bam! same problem. I am going to try downgrading then going back up and see what happens. You can always restore it is already broken 8(.

all problems are fixed by upgrading to iTunes 7.6. Apple just released it and the new firmware go by easy, just restore from a backup.

I tried that.........I can get to the screen u are speaking about on phone but when I plug into iTunes there is no option for restore.....or am I missing it???? The normal place it usually is.......where the update button is is NOT there......its just blank and in big letters says iPhone across that section??? Is there another place to click restore?

First thing I need to ask you...Did you update iTunes to version 7.6???

If so...after seeing this over in apple forums...You got a bad install of iTunes and need to uninstall 3 applications. I tunes updater, iTunes and Quicktime. Once you have that complete, redownload the new iTunes update v 7.6 and reinstall. Do NOT have anything else running while you download the update.

Hope this helps...Good Luck

invalid SIM

virgin iPhone running 1.1.2 on Macbook Pro Leopard 10.5.1.

I ran Software Update, got iTunes, Quicktime, iMovie and whatever, rebooted, connected the iPhone. Downloaded update OK, but when it rebooted (phone) it said "No SIM card Installed:, and iTunes said
The iPhone "iPhone" could not be used with iTunes because the SIM card is PIN locked or not installed. You must enter your SIM PIN or insert your SIM card into your iPhone in order to activate it.

Any ideas?

killed my phone

tried to update to 1.1.3, it dl's the update and then tried to install it, and stopped in the middle with error 1603. Phone is stuck and when rebooted is asking for iTunes, ands when hooking up to iTunes, it says the phone is in recovery mode, and suggests trying to recover, and when doing so, it just freezes with that error 1603. Called support and they said they had someone else with that, and they thought the server is getting slammed, and to try again in a few hours. I hope it's all it will need. Meanwhile, no phone!!!!
Not very well tested this thing!

I am soooo freakin PISSED right now!! So I just tried to install the update on a non-jailbreaked phone, and now I'm stuck in recovery mode. When I try to restore I get error 1611: An unknown error occurred.. WTF!!
