At the end of 2005 IBM and Motorola STILL had not achieved 3Ghz speeds, Apple had water cooling on a couple models because of heat, and any potential 3Ghz chips were coming in low yields because of problems. On top of that, Apple had also promised a G5 laptop. They even built a prototype but because of the heat it just could not be done.
I think Apple and Steve gave the G5 more than enough chances. If anyone failed the G5 it was IBM and Motorola. Not Apple.
Considering what kind of blown up marketing was behind the G5 (the worlds fastest personal computer), with a lot of Intel mocking in the back, since 1996. I think it's kinda ridiculous how fast the PowerPC was dropped in favour of an architecture, that was claimed to be sh*t from Apple's side for so many years.
Of course in the end it's all just marketing.
But if I had been a loyal Apple customer from the 90's until 2005, believing that the PowerPC is so much better, I guess I would feel like, that my favoured company was fooling me all the time.
And I'm sure that was not just for the Pro Users, but for the consumer product targeted people too. Every Mac (including iMacs and iBooks) that has been advertised since the first Power Mac, also advertised the included hardware, not just the design or the OS.
They even burned Intel's bunny man.
And today it feels like they abandoning the Mac in favour of the iPhone/iPad. The trash can Mac Pro and it's outdated hardware are just a major example of that.
