Today was my first full day without Cydia. I had used Pwnage 2.0 in Simple mode, which installed Cydia by default. So why remove it?

Well... from the get go I was disappointed in the performance of 2.0 on my 1st gen iPhone. Scrolling through contacts was slower, the normal animation (opening/closing, scrolling apps) was sluggish, holding the home key down had trouble killing apps as normal. Something was wrong.

But what was it??? I had no clue. Was it the Pwnage? Apple's firmware? I pwned the phone a few times to see if there was any difference, but nothing :( Plus my iPhone had been unlocked & jailbroken since day 1 and I never had these types of performance issues.

The one thing I did notice was that Cydia was the worst performing app. Coming from Installer, I wasn't surprised that it froze because Installer did the same updating all its sources. So I wasn't sure if it was really the cause of my problems.

Last night I decided to re-pwn the phone, this time using Expert mode and unchecking Cydia. Guess what, it's been running like a well oiled machine for the last 15 hours! :)

If anyone is experiencing some of the problems I had, you might want to try uninstalling Cydia if you don't need it. I'm sure I'll re-install Cydia again once things are a bit more stable.

cydia just killed my keyboard, i restored it, and removed cydia on a new firmware and my space bar and lower keys still anint working :s F**K I hate cydia

too bad cydia is better, meh.

its been updated twice in the last 24 hours, try again :p

Yea i noticed my unlocked 2G iPhone was lagging a lot... not as snappy as it used to be back in 1.1.4. Rebuilding my custom ipsw as I type this. Until the "Installer" apps get ported over... I'm gonna have to leave Cydia out.

Thanks for the tip man.

I notice this too. I'm thinking I will drop Cydia until a reasonable number of useful apps are ported. So do I just build another custom firmware in pwnage 2.0 and the use expert mode and leave out Cydia?

Cheers for this chaps.

I'm tempted to do the same as I'm not that bothered about the 3rd party applications (for now) and would also like to remove the crappy pineapple logo...

but the expert mode frightens me a little... if I uncheck Cydia and the custom logo and not change anything else is that ok? anything i should know about?

Yes, you are correct. I have just done exactly what you want to do. In expert mode leave everything default except inside Custom Packages UNCHECK the Cydia installer and inside Custom Logos UNCHECK both Boot and Recovery logos.
Be sure you click "YES" to 'have you pwned your iPhone before.

Be sure that all your paid for apps are transferred to iTunes. For some reason mine messed up and I don't have any of my paid for apps anymore. iTunes wants me to pay for them again.

I went into Pwnage, Expert mode. Under "Custom Packages" un-check Cydia. I also unchecked the dev-teams custom logos under "Custom Logos". Then just use the Pwnage tool as usual... I touched nothing else!

NOTE: it asks you if the phone was pwned before, answer "yes" and it will tell you to close Pwnage and finish the restore through iTunes. At that point I put the phone into DFU mode as usual, restored wth the custom firmware, then restored my iPhone from backup to get mail settings, contacts, etc back on.

One final tip: I had to disable EDGE because I only use wfi. The only way I knew of was to SSH in to the phone (requires Cydia). But I found this http://unlockit.co.nz/

Visit the link on your iPhone in Safari and follow the instructions. It loads an app on the phone that puts in fake APN settings so EDGE is disabled. Worked like a charm for me! And you can move it at anytime from the phone by going to Settings->General->Profile.

Ah, ok. Does it need to be DFU (ie black screen) in iTunes? Not just normal restore mode?

My DFU shows the iPhone data cable pictured. To get to DFU I closed iTunes and held down the Home and power key together, while the phone is attacked to the Mac. After awhile the phone showed the slider to power off.. KEEP HOLDING THE KEYS... then in went black... KEEP HOLDING THE KEYS.. then it appears to be restarting showing the Apple logo... STILL KEEP HOLDING. Finally it showed the data cable.

At that point I let go of all keys. iTunes starts up on my Mac and gives the poppup message that it has to be restored.

Hopefully this method works for you. It appears (from reading the forum) a lot of people have problems getting to DFU.

Also, when restoring, hold the Option button on the keyboard while pressing restore button in iTunes. This allows you to browse for the ipsw that Pwnage created. Mine was on my desktop

is there a guide to manually remove cydia trough ssh? cause i want to keep shh and rmove cydia. if i reflash without cydia i won't be able to shh.

Does your Google Maps WIFI locate-me (not regular GPS) work better?
I have had tremendous slow downs with Google Maps. WIl killing Cydia fix this? Anyone else notice this?

I can confirm- I re-pwnaged my phone WITHOUT the Cydia software as detailed above....glitches disappeared include the Contacts app freezes.

Thanks for the tip!

Rioja or others:

I am a newbie with this PWNAGE stuff.

While Cydia is a culprit, a lot of other bugginess is related to the 2.0 update Apple released (most annoying being the l-o-n-g sync times).

When Apple releases a 2.0.1, what happens to us who have pwnage'd phones?
  • Do we wait for word from the dev team?
  • Do we connect to iTunes and download the updated firmware or is that a very very bad thing to do with a pwnaged phone?
  • Do we have to re-pwnage the new firmware when a new version of pwnage comes out, and then do the whole DFU thing/restore thing all over again?

Thanks so much for the guidance!!!!

When I went from 1.1.3 to 1.1.4 with Pwnage tool I had to restore to the 1.1.4 firmware from Apple then Pwn the phone. what does this mean for a 2.0.1 release... absolutely nothing!!!

My advice, wait till Apple releases an update then see what the dev-team says about Pwnage. They may/may not have to release an update to the tool.

Within a few hours people will have either succeeded or failed at re-pwning.

Still not buying it....

Why, if Cydia is the cause of slow downs with Contacts for example are there so many posts about the overall slowdown and slowness when typing SMS and opening contacts, even before Pwnage 2.0 was released????

I mean hey if this is working for some of you great but I've used my 3G for quite awhile and experienced the same slowness and lag without jailbreaking and obviously Cydia.

I think the slowness root cause lies somewhere else and think we'll see 2.0.1 very soon.

But since I just jailbroke mine last night I'll see if it is slower w/Cydia.

Ah, ok. Does it need to be DFU (ie black screen) in iTunes? Not just normal restore mode? Could this be why I am getting

i installed bossprefs on my 3G iPhone and while it works.. for some reason I cannot open the native Settings app.. it just shows a blank screen... and crashes the phone...

so i deleted bossprefs!! but i left the SSH to OFF...

and most times i open cydia.. i can't get back to the home screen.. no matter how many times i press the home button! :( PITA

I have to say im really hoping installer comes out for 2.0

Cydia is such a badly written mess

It locks up all the time meaning I have to hard reset my phone, and there is nothing on it to install of any use whatsoever

I miss installer :(

I miss it too :(

There is a "what & why" Cydia page here

I read it all and it "sounds" like a much better app than Installer. I just hope it soon lives up to it's hype.
