This is what I ordered. Very good reviews, many from mac users, and a lifetime warranty. Oh yeah, its only 69.99
All of the bad reviews were from Mac owners. It is strange that somehow no PC owner had any problems. There might be some truth in Macs being picky about RAM. :)

This is the biggest waste of time ever.

You have to buy 2 sticks to make it work so its really a waste of time.

Besides, eBay sells memory for 64 dollars as well with free shipping, and its GUARANTEED to work in your macbook, with a lifetime warranty.

Maybe not, ive never heard of optival, but at least theres the warranty

you don't need to buy 2 sticks to make it work.

got my ram a day early. haven't installed it yet (have not been able to locate a small enough screwdriver in the house to remove the metal bracket to get to my ram in my macbook  ).

it's transcend jetram with a lifetime warranty. on the back of the package, it says "100% tested" and "100% compatability" but no further details about each statement.

i should stop by a radio shack to get the 00 philips screwdriver i need and install it tomorrow night...

It uses a 00 size screwdriver but the tip of a knife (swiss army or the like) will do the trick with a little patience.

Yuck on transcend, but good luck with the install :)

There really isn't any "best".
All 100% compatible Mac RAM will run at precisely the same speed in your machine.
And if the RAM isn't 100% compatible, then you shouldn't put it in your Mac.

Good RAM can come in many brands, Kingston, Crucial, Samsung, Elpida, Hynix, Nanya, Micron, Swissbit, Transcend, etc. etc., and it's equally true that each of the above make hundreds of models of of RAM that is fine RAM but totally wrong for your machine -- which is why buying even a name brand from eBay or a discounter is risky unless you know that the model is exactly the right one for your Mac.

What it comes down to is whether the seller will guarantee their product is 100% compatible, and how well they take care of you as a customer.
As has been recommended many times on MR, sticking with a Mac-aware seller with a good track record is the safest. There are lots: Crucial, OWC and Data Memory Systems are most often recommended on MR, because they have a consistent record of treating Mac customers right. There are other reputable sellers, 1-8004memory and MemoryX are two off the top of my head, Orca in the UK I have also heard good things about. There's this little company in Canada who's halfways decent, too.

Also, don't forget to compare your local Apple dealer.

I freely admit my bias towards knowledgeable dealers who have good customer service policies. And you may pay $ 5 - 20 more for that than the lowest possible price seller.

I also admit a bias against companies that play games with pricing, engage in bait-and-switch selling, advertise lowest prices on items that are never in stock, disclaim any responsibility for compatibility, have low customer satisfaction ratings on Resellerratings and Epinions, charge restocking fees on incompatible RAM, shortchange the customer on warranty and lie in their advertising. I suggest avoiding those companies like the plague - the risk is not worth a $10 savings.

Taylor: use the right screwdriver. A stripped screw is way more grief than you want, especially when any hardware store has the 00 phillips for $5 or less.

I wish there was a Frys even remotely close to me. They always seem to have really good specials.

They do, but it's always of cheap stuff. There's a Fry's walking distance to me -- I can't believe how many times I've had to return stuff because of the crappiness.

Although Blizzard does hold their midnight/release celebrations at my Fry's :) those are always fun.

also, can you point me in the right direction, i seem to be a sucker for the higher prices, and can't find any deals on these. thanks a lot for your help

i didn't want to triple post, so canada ram, i didn't really see anything on http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16820231069 so what do you think about it. thanks again for your help, and sorry to bother you so much

Well I cant answer for CanadaRam but I just recieved my 1 gig stick of the above mentioned ram from newegg. I installed the ram and downloaded the newest Memtest/OSX ($1.39) and ran the full test in single user mode. My MBP passed with no errors in 2236 seconds. All I can say is so far so good with the G.Skill, it is very inexpensive and has a lifetime warranty. Got my thumbs up!:D

Just to update this thread for folks that might be interested, I ended up purchasing 2 sticks of 1 Gig RAM for my Macbook Pro. I think I got a decent deal and just installed them.

Wow the Macbook really flies now. As a relatively new apple user, I'm so very impressed with this macbook pro and it continues to amaze me :apple:

Oh well now I have one stick of 1GB ram that I guess I should sell?

Cheers.

I just wanted to chime in and state that running memtest as you said is very important, no matter what quality of RAM you bought. It'll help you catch errors before they happen, or give you pretty good peace of mind. I ended up getting some "value" RAM for my Macbook, but since it passed an overnight run of memtest, I'm pretty confident that it's good and I got a good deal.

There's a MacRumors Guide on testing memory.
