So Apples great UI 'design' team strikes again.
This time they've 'improved' iPhoto by renaming it Photos and making the UI a big white square with borderless thumbnail images on it.
Big whoop de ****in do!
Must have taken all their greatest designers to come up with that masterpiece!
An absolute joke of an 'upgrade' that you can't even alter.
Still, at least I have some new 'emojis' do display my disatisfaction.
Absolutely, shockingly bad...just terrible.

UPDATE: Although removed from your dock by the update, the iPhoto app is still there (thank God), so you can at least go back to it (phew).

Personally I think Photos looks much nicer than IPhoto which was hideous. I would like the Photos app more if there were more features and if there were better ways of organising the photos.

Apart from the aesthetics of the app which I like, the usability is 0 to none for me.

i think it's great. loads faster than iphoto loaded my library. syncs effortlessly to my iphone. easy to get organized. good editing tools. am fine with it (and not missing iphoto at all). but...to each his own...

I'm still waiting on a true replacement for Aperture. We might not ever get one from Apple though.

I'm also still on Mavericks. I gave Yosemite a try from the first developer preview till a while after the official release. I ended up doing a full wipe and fresh install of Mavericks. Much happier, less bugs, less bright colors and transparency.

I know there's Lightroom, but I have everything organized just how I like it with projects, folders, albums, and non-destructive edits all over the place. Plus it imports my photo stream when I open it. Very handy.

There's no way I could use iCloud photo library, I've got tens of thousands of photos taking up well over a few hundred GB on an external drive with my iTunes and software libraries. Fine for the average consumer I suppose. But still, I want Aperture 4.

iphoto is 1000000% better, I don't know what Apple was thinking and why they decide that Photos is better.

For example one great way to organize your photos is with events, iphoto do that automatically and Photos don't even have that feature.

Also Photos is slower than Iphoto I will restart my MAC but after installing Photos and upgrading my library I see that everything is slower than with Iphoto.

The only things I like with Photos is that you can view all your panoramas in one place, the same for Time-Lapse and Slo-mo photos. But Apple could include that tabs in iphoto without issues but why they remove Events in Photos, that was one of the greatest feature ever, also you could see photos inside events very easily.

Yes, I had to go to my applications folder and drag it back in.

New Photos app has been a godsend for me. iPhoto was slow and clunky. I now have all my photos in the cloud and synced to all my devices now. I'm on the 99 cent/ month 20GB cloud storage option and still have 5GB available. It's just perfect and works seamlessly. All changes are synced.

I migrated over from iPhoto then uploaded everything to the cloud and then did a clean install of 10.10.3. All my photos automatically showed up after the clean install.

I personally love iPhoto. I've got 50GB of photos in it, and it's not sluggish at all (SSD) so I'm glad they've kept iPhoto still....I can't see myself leaving it unless they remove it

Nice post, and I agree. I really like that everything is synced up between my devices. So I can take photos on my iPhone and later edit them on my iPad while on the couch watching TV. I also like that the full resolution version is also synced to my Mac's hard drive.

I also really like that deleting a photo deletes it from all devices. No more "Oh crap, I accidentally took a screenshot... I need to delete it from my phone quick before Photostream copies it to all my devices."

I never thought I'd hear myself say that I like iPhoto. Thanks to the OP for catching that iPhoto is still installed. As long as you don't migrate your photo library to Photos, you can upgrade to 10.10.3 and still use iPhoto.

After about an hour of "preparing library" it crashes and never finishes. It takes an hour for it to crash, apple hasn't been able to figure it out yet.

So thanks to the OP, I'm downloading the latest version of iPhoto, (mine was 8.2 I think and it was rendered obsolete) to try and revive my photos so that I can at least access them while apple gets to the bottom of the problem.

Okay now I'm getting ***** pissed!

I was able to obtain iPhoto 9.5, and iPhoto 9.6 (the most recent) and neither will launch!! They both (and the older version I used on Wednesday) have the the white cross through them!

Any idea how to get them to work??

I usually don't bad mouth Apple but this is BS.

My iPhoto library (which I only kept for ordering print products), was copied and updated to a Photos library before running Photos which I find very odd indeed. Have now deleted the Photos version...all my serious images are in Capture One now...

I genuinely cannot see me continuing using a Mac for very much longer. I think when my current iMac is up for renewal it won't get replaced.

The reason for this is because I just don't like the direction OS X is being taken. Photos being the latest debacle. Who thought that Photos was a step forward? I dislike just about everything about it. Now all my photos are stored by dates. This is madness, example - I have given my holiday photos a group name e.g. Summer Holidays 2014. What Photos has managed to do is dispense with the title and put all the photos I had taken on that two week holiday into separate days.

Had I wanted them listed as separate days/dates I wouldn't have given them a group name of Summer Holidays 2014. How is one supposed to run a slide show when the photos are in separate days?

Thank goodness for Google and Picasa. From what I can see Windows 10 is shaping up into a pretty good OS and I think if Apple continue with this present madness of messing up OS X then MS will be getting my money again next time around.

Of late I'm finding each OS X update to be a real let down, with me often regretting doing the update. When I got my macbook in 2012 I absolutely loved OS X and would install updates without even researching them. I loved everything about my macbook. But not any longer. Nowadays Im finding I first have to wait a few weeks and read others reviews, before I nervously perform the update myself. OS X now appears to just be a macbook version of IOS, instead of being designed especially for MacBooks, with each update appearing to be a backwards step.

When my macbook dies, or becomes out of date, Im not sure I will be buying another.

My wife has made very similar comments. She has always hogged my iMac, some days I can't get a look in. However, she has berated me for the last few updates I have done, especially Yosemite, plus iOS8 has crippled my iPad 2.

TBH clicking on the Photos app was a genuine mistake. I was trying to remove the app from the Dock when I accidentally opened the darned thing. I just hate Apple's arrogance i.e. you've opened the App now you will have to use it and you will enjoy it.

At least Picasa is still in a format I can appreciate.

That's no longer possible. To put it differently, events and moments have the same goals, but while events were merely suggestive, moments are strict.

I think Apple was a bit too idealistic and not so much practical. If you happen to have pictures that don't have correct dates then Photos will forcibly separate pictures that could previously be merged into one event upon import. Effectively, to arrange your pictures, you either have to manually adjust the dates or use albums instead. Fortunately, your old events are preserved as albums too when you import your library.

I can see how it would upset people. iPhoto didn't care whether your pictures were properly timestamped, labelled or tagged with location data. Photos does and it can ruin your organisation.

Are you kidding? Photos can't be moved in or out of a "moment"?

This "upgrade" seems lousier with every thread I read. I can't believe Apple needed a year to develop this clunker of an app.

Actually I'm in the same position, I use MS Office for all such tasks, Post Box for email, Chrome or FF for Internet and now Picasa for photos, OneDrive or Google Drive for the Cloud. It doesn't leave much, Apple take note. #

Tell me about it. I had scanned all my old prints to digital, literally a lifetimes memories. Photos has now come up with ridiculous dates for most of them and placed them all over. It seems to think photos taken fifty years ago were taken in 1990 - I scanned them 5 years ago. #

Ugh. If you haven't deleted your iPhoto library then you can revert to it. I moved all my images (600GB), to Capture One a couple of months ago. So glad I did.
