Using the iMac (2013) in target display mode connected to the nMP enables 30 bit colour on the iMac display which is pretty nice if you have an old iMac sitting around. The iMac on its own does not support 30 bit colour probably due to the gfx card
The iMac 2013 27" had one of the worst panels ever produced in recent times and triggered many complaints. The colour and brightness isn't even across the screen in most cases. Open the same image (preferably an uncompressed red product shot) twice in Photoshop and compare side by side.

I just read today that the new and the previous iMac support 10-bit per channel video output, i.e. 30-bit color instead of 24-bit color.

With Mac OS X 10.11.1 this should be indicated in the System Information under Hardware > Graphics/Displays. The iMac shows there "ARGB2101010".

I wonder if the nMP (with a 30-bit color display) supports this feature, too. If someone would be so kind to have a look? That would be great.

here's mine. You may want to find a 5870, as it is a way better card. Back in 09 mine cost $400.

Just keep this in mind if you are a colour grader or print worker. Setting 10/30 bit in Photoshop and OSX is one thing. Having a true wide gamut monitor is another. There are many affordable 10 bit monitors these days that are not true 10 bit nor truly wide gamut, even if they do offer great images and value. Here's a new one from Asus that can only cover 76% of Adobe RGB despite its 10 bit spec.

Monitors from Eizo or NEC are still the best choice, especially for fine tuned calibration against your final output.

Looks like all the displays are 10 bit here.....

Depending on the scaled resolution the color depth will change to 32 bit (ARGB8888) for the first and third display.
