Used these directions for converting the movie 'The Hangover'. I'm getting a final output of 640x480, and that is the max width. Does this seem correct?

This directions are for ripping a 1920x1080 HD file (like a Blu-ray rip). Is this a DVD rip? If so DVD's resolution is 640x480.

It seems you have a MBP, so I'm wondering how you ripped the BluRay DVD...

My method is as follows: Crack the disc using AnyDVD HD on my windows box, create the ts file using TSmuxer and then run that through handbrake on my MBP.

I have quick question. How long does it usually take to convert a HD movie in hanbrake to put into a iPad. Just curious to know if I am doing something wrong. Thanks.

Ok, then that should be correct. I was confused as the source states 720x480, but the output is 640x480. Is there a reason why the output resolution would not be the same as the source?

Sorry but my info was abbreviated/incomplete for easy of post. Also your output if 1.78 (16x9) should be 640x360 (you must keep Anamorphic as Strict when using a DVD)*. A DVD is 720x480 which is 1.5 and not 1.78 (16x9). A DVD uses non square pixels and a 1.78 picture is vertically squeezed to 1.5 to fit on a DVD. It is then un-squizzed back to 1.78 before it's sent out. This is the anamorphic process in a DVD. You can't have a 720x480 because it's the wrong aspect ratio. This is way the resplution must be changed to 640x360=1.78 or 16x9.

*I've never done a DVD in HB, only BD's.

It depends on quality desired and length of movie, also the hardware you are running handbrake on plays a factor. For me it's usually about 8-10hrs, but for Avatar being that it's almost 3hrs long it took longer. But i create one 1280x720 file for all purposes, I don't create specific iPad files. As always YMMV.

You can use Handbrake to encode anamorphically, just like a DVD. This is how iTunes encodes their videos, except they encode 16:9 content at 640x480 to display in 853x480. This is so that the vids maintain compatability with the old 5G iPod. The iPod Classic, iPhone and iPod touch can handle 720x480 video.

You do not have to keep anamorphic as strict when encoding DVD's, you can use loose to decide a max width and then Handbrake will do the rest, or you can set your own custom settings (like if you want to encode videos the way iTunes does if you still have a 5G iPod.)
