Ahh, I got mine exactly one week after they started shipping. Maybe I should throw it a birthday party next Friday!

I remember my bondi beauty fondly...the first CD I played in it was Ace of Base's "Flowers" album...I remember the smell of the hot plastics as it ran....I remember how fast it felt, how fast the Internet felt even though it was dial up. It was the first computer in our family that was designated as mine and I got it for my birthday maybe when I was in 10th grade or so. It was awesome. I remember going out to Costco to look for a USB printer--USB was the thing then. We had to find everything USB, and I remember going to radio shack to find a USB cable and they had no idea what it was. So Costco had what I think was maybe the Epson 740, the only USB printer Costco had, and it was expensive, like 350 or so.
That was back when computers were cool--there was still innovation to be found in new machines, and people got excited when CD burn times got improved, or USB got faster. Good times.

Wow, 10 years! In some ways, it seems much longer than that!
I remember when my family got our Bondi Blue iMac. I was so excited. It seems like it was our first "new" computer. We had a couple computers before that (an LC 475, and something else I don't remember) but each of those was purchased used.
People were so shocked at the lack of a floppy drive! And, as swingerofbirch said, USB was so new and amazing. I could actually plug in something without shutting down!!
That was a great computer.

10 Years of the iMac
Yup, 10 years to the day, Apple released the iMac and changed it all. Kinda surprised it hasn't had a mention on the frontpage yet. I've marked the occasion here: http://www.appleobserver.net/wordpress/

Wow! The original iMac actually looked really fricken cool. Not sure if we'll see another ten years, but it's possible. Apple will probably keep the product, but change its name at some point.
My family doctor is a mac user. He has the gen 1 imacs in each observation room and the newer imacs in his office and the front desk. He's all cool guy. we always talk macs when I go in for a visit.
There will still be desktops, but they'll be servers, distributing "cloud computing" bits to all the little boys and girls...
I just don't think that will ever happen. No matter how technology advances, a desktop will always be powerful than an laptop of the same era. One can never put as much power in a tiny enclosed space as they can in a larger, more heat efficient case. By this I mean; yes, one day there will be eight core MBP's, but by then there might be 32 core Mac Pro's. I think there will always be people who want as much power as is possible at that moment and I don't think a laptop will ever be the most powerful computer out there, no matter who makes it.
Serial and Parallel have done this for years

Yeah, I know. When the new iMac's came out last August, I wasn't really into Apple, but I knew what the original iMac's were. I was walking around, thinking about them, when I stopped, and realized just how far the iMac had come since its inception, in design alone. Who knows what they'll come up with next?

I think Apple needs to have a "retro line" of Macs. Old designs with new innards. Bring back the iMac G3 and G4 designs with updated hardware! Same goes for PowerMacs and iBooks!

and to think my poor imac baby died this time last week!!!!!
i have no idea what has happened to it, i was planning on turning it into my media server. i turned it off from upstairs, took it downstairs and now it doesnt work.

I second that, personally. My mom brought home a G3 Graphite the other day so I could compare it with my current iMac...funny little machine.

Who would want a computer that was built as a CRT all-in-one when most people today use LCD? I know some people do use CRT (like you), but a lot of people use LCD. I don't see how that would sell too well. Plus, the iMac G3 had a screen size at 15" max, way to small by most people's standards today.
If you wouldn't mind telling me, what advantage do the designs of the Powerbooks and the iBooks offer over today's MacBooks and MacBook Pros? Aside from the 12" form factor of the 12" PowerBook.
Interestingly, I have seen an LCD Intel Mac mini mod for the G3. It looked pretty cool actually. A more likely retro lineup, though, would be Power Mac G3/G4, maybe iBook G3/G4, and perhaps a 12" PowerBook turned MacBook Pro. I've always thought the biggest hole in the new lineup is the lack of the 12" and 14" screens that the iBook had. A retro 14" iBook would have been perfect for me, in terms of screen size, since I don't need the power of a MacBook Pro.

That's cool about the G3 mod. But what I want to know is this: why is a 14 inch screen necessary? Seems a little strange to me. A 15 inch screen is not much bigger and wouldn't be too hard to carry around, and a 13 inch screen would be even easier to carry. Than again, it might just be that fact that no company can please everyone; no matter what, some person will have gripes with a company. I bet if a new company that made cheap, affordable, renewable energy, someone would still want to buy gasoline.
Now, I'm going to go out on a limb here and say something some may not agree with. The iMac G4 was good in it's time, but I don't think it could work today. It looks old and almost toy-like by today's standards.
So did I back then.. I was die-hard PC guy, and couldnt believe you couldnt switch out internals like a tower..who the hell would buy such a machine? And that "soft" looking OS, and its colors, and that little mouse...
It would take me a few more years before I learned the err of my ways!
