In terms of performance they are fantastic! The flash drive REALLY makes all the difference. Hell garage band boots up in a few seconds its so frickin quick and even iPhoto runs so smoothly and iMovie - all the iLife 11 apps. The speakers work amazingly well and this is all on the 11" MacBook air! You wouldn't even know your running a machine that's 1.4ghz I'm not even kidding. I wasn't so sure about the new release but I test driven one in our local store yesterday.

Absoloutely amazed by the machine seriously.

Worth the buy if your after portability but yes backlit keyboard is a shame and so is infrared but surely there's an app or something if you have anipod touch or iPhone to control your presentations etc? Worth a look if you have one.

I would defo recommend it for your uses!

I'm not in the USA, in the UK its £80 for the RAM upgrade, which is roughly $125.

Its a rip off IMO given the going rate for 2GB DDR3 here is £20 - £30. 2GB will have to suffice as I refuse to pay extortionate amounts of money for an upgrade I can live without.

It's 90€ for me which is $125. You can't compare it to the price of extra 2GB because in order to achieve 4GB by using the same amount of space, denser chips have to be used and they cost more. Take a look at the prices of 4GB modules, the price that Apple charges ain't that bad anymore.

Besides, it's take or leave situation, you can't upgrade it by yourself. I'm sure some people would pay the double price if they had to.

Am I right in thinking that even though the MBA is .43ghz less (in numbers) in reality it's two processors, so, 2.8ghz when compared to my current laptop??
NO. Your laptop is a Core Duo, which means it already has dual core. Your current system is faster than the 1.4ghz, probably around the same speed as the 1.6ghz.

That said, the SSD will make the new air FEEL faster, but if you want to maintain the same level of performance, get the 13" version.

Nope, the Core 2 Duo has some architecture improvements other than being 64 bit which gives it better performance. So even at only 1.4 GHz it will be slightly faster than a 1.83 GHz Core Duo. That combined with the SSD will give it a much snappier feel. Oh yeah not to mention the 320M which is lightyears ahead of the GMA950 (Which can barely run the original counterstrike, the 320M can handle CS:source very well). The new MBA will also do better with HD video playback.
