I received my 12.9 IPad Pro 256G with 5G on May 24. Initial attempt to move content from an older iPad failed. Then the fireworks started. The new iPad got stuck in the reboot loop. After multiple attempts, I got the system reinstalled and updated. I restored from either the cloud or my laptop backup. I don’t remember which. I decided that I would keep the iPad unless the crashing occurred again within the return window.

I was having trouble with the 5G connection so visited my local TMobile retailer. The 4 bored employees managed to show me how to enable fallback to 4G LTE. So all was working well until I connected with my bank to pay some bills. Logged in, started scheduling payments and up pops the white apple on a black screen.

To help everyone understand, I didn’t have a bunch of other apps running. In fact, nothing but Safari was running. There were a couple of windows open in Safari but nothing out of the ordinary. I finished my banking after it rebooted without further problems.

I reset and erased the iPad and returned it to the local BB store. Now I am waiting for another to ship. Was I just unlucky or are there problems with the new iPad Pros? I know that another software update came out after I returned my iPad. Was the update related to stability problems?

I guess you received an ipad with defect chips or underperformed components. Idk. My iPad Pro 2021 11” has no major issue so far.

There are none available for exchange and I don’t want a repaired or refurbished iPad that cost that much.

At this point in time, all the replacements from Apple are bound to be new. There hasn't been time to get repaired/refurbed stock yet. Still, return and buy again is better while within the return window.

Unfortunately, I have already returned it. I was worried it would be sent in for repair and take more time than waiting for another new one. I still would like to hear from other owners who have had quality or performance issues with the new 12.9 M1 model.

Simply just bad luck. Wait for your new unit and tell us how it goes.

What you experienced is definitely not the norm. I would have reinstalled and set up as new to rule out a corrupt backup. Hopefully, the new one will not have any problems.
I did that more than once. I used backup from iCloud, Windows backup and finally broke out my Mac laptop. Getting the iOS to reload was problematic to put it nicely.

Not sure how I can make this thing crash. It’s extremely powerful for an iPad. So for OP, I will return the iPad for sure.

No crashes here, 12.9 256.
Encouraging. Makes me think it is not a widespread issue. That makes my wait for my new iPad worthwhile. Sometimes we tend to minimize problems when we get a new device. I was worried when I posted this there would be a flood of replies indicating issues.

The whole system crashing and restarting is definitely not a small problem - it’s a showstopper. If something like this happens to my iPad I will get it exchanged immediately.

No issues (other than good ones — I love it) with my 1TB 12.9 wifi model.
I loved mine when connected to my wifi at home. Browsing was fluid and lightening fast. I was surprised that the M1 made such a difference in my overall experience. I can only dream of needing a 1TB iPad. You have my envy. Thanks for chiming in. “No issue” are encouraging words. I am getting impatient for the replacement now. I am using a borrowed old iPad for the moment. My old 2018 12.9 iPad Pro had two distracting hot spots in the center of the screen. The M1 I returned had good even illumination. I never noticed the blooming that reviewers are complaining about. I hope to love mine, when I get it.

I generally prefer to do a “setup as new iPad” to make sure I don’t let possible glitches from old iPad get installed.. I have had this 12.9” 256gb wifi M1 since may 21 and no crashing.

it was faulty not a big deal. you did the right thing returning it. well, really you should've took it to Apple and they'd have arranged a replacement for you. you always get some faulty units for any product. you were just unlucky.

no problems with my 11" iPad Pro.

All chips have a defect factor. When an error occurs during operation because of a defect, the chip is designed to compensate for this, and a self restart is part of this process. It is possible you received a chip with a high defect factor, or a defect in an area of the chip that is difficult or impossible to reroute using the correction algorithm. Let us know if you have similar problems with the new unit, I’m always interested on the correction factor of new silicon.

I got my new working iPad Pro M1 12.9. This one restored from my temporary iPad I was using until I got the. New one. Everything seems to be working as it should. I worked on the first one for 4 or 5 hours to get my data and applications on it. Now if I can get any of the bonus items that were offered before the original purchase everything will be grand. Thanks for everyone with comments regarding my situation. I was really surprised that Best Buy got me a replacement this quickly.

You got a bad unit, which happens with mass production.
