I did that more than once. I used backup from iCloud, Windows backup and finally broke out my Mac laptop. Getting the iOS to reload was problematic to put it nicely.
I think he means DON’T use backups. Set up as NEW. So you would manually reinstall important apps and use the iPad for a while to see if the problems still occur. If they didn’t, that would indicate a corrupt back from iCloud or a Windows machine.

I used my M1 12.9 512gb about 10h daily the last 7 days and never had any issues. For my taste the battery life is poor but as it holds 10h from charge to charge I guess it’s as apple advertised it. I used a lot of final Draft, Safari, Netflix, Pages, Lightroom, procreate, Notability and a few games. Oh and Luma Fusion. Sometimes I had all this apps open in the background. I could easily jump between apps. No stability problems.

My replacement iPad Pro has been a pleasure to use. It might become slow to respond once every 7 to 10 days. I attribute this to iOS issues and closing all applications and a shut down and subsequent restart solves the sluggish performance.

Hey @MartinGaleTX

I can also agree with @OlsFR - It is definitely a real issue. It crashed for me again today. I have had mine for 3 weeks and it is the 6th time it has shut down. On this occasion it shut down when trying to open the files app From the dock.

I have also experienced very poor battery performance that I expected to sort its self out after the 1st week but it didn’t.

A replacement is on the way so hopefully better luck with the new one.

I do not have many apps installed or data on it and have the 2 TB version. I have found no pattern with the shutdowns, they only all occur with the device in use and on 2 occasion lost some content.

Will let you know what happens with the replacement

I urge everyone who has a new iPad Pro M1 that crashes to either get a refund or a new replacement. I would not send it in for replacement if it was purchased as new and has this fatal defect. Everyone who purchases hardware off this class and elevated cost should expect reliable hardware running reliable software. Do not think it will get better or have a software fix. It is probably defective hardware and should be avoid if at all possible.

I set my first attempt up as new and haven't had any reliability issues so far. Probably backup restore causing issues with new M1 architecture.

The replacement has not crashed once now in the 12 days I have had it. I did a restore from the last one and the only issue is battery life. Maybe most the apps need to be optimised for M1 or something as I am seeing very poor battery performance when using safari, you tube, and some basic productivity apps.

Anyway really pleased that the crashing has stopped on this new M1 ipad

Let’s see if ipad Os 15 can fix some of the battery issues.

I have had the replacement for around 1 month and it has started to crash ?‍♂️

I set up this ipad and the previous one as new and am a little annoyed that apple seem to be releasing devices with such a high fail rate and often fall very short of meeting advertised performance, battery life being a particular one.

Does anyone have any advice on what we should be doing next? Apple support in store is pretty ? I can say for certain they will take it and give it back saying nothing is wrong with it.

Genuine question what type of crashes are you seeing? Is it fully rebooting with the apple logo, or is it apps crashing and you needing to reload them.

I have a day one device, and its not crashed at all, I had to restore it with DFU mode because of a problem at the start but since then its been amazing.

Anyway I hope you get your iPad sorted.

Think I maybe one of the lucky ones, there is a bit of blooming but i have gotten used to that now ?

Hi @hammie14

It reboots and will crash with no consistency - the files app or safari cause it to happen.

Since my last post 10 days ago it has not crashed yet, and I plan to do a restore from mac when ipad 15 is out tomorrow.

The blooming does take a lot of getting used to! It kind of looks like the polarisation through sunglasses when looking at reflective surfaces. It definitely blurs and hides the detail in the shadows close to high contrast edges.

How are you finding the battery performance on your device?

Battery is up and down, sometimes I get 5 to 6 hours (usage) over a few days, then other times ill get 9 to 10 hours constant use. Use Magic Keyboard and screen brightness normally not over 75%

About the same, maybe slightly worse. Waiting over 1 month for the battery seems reasonable to reach full capacity, now ipad os 15 will probably be doing lots in the background for the next few days.

Something I find really problematic is the battery usage in settings. Its all over the place and not very accurate, not really understanding why theres so much background activity even with background app refresh off?!

I have disabled siri and all these other settings and only have screen brightness at 50% but still after a month now its ? but then again most apple battery powered products are the same. (iPhone is probably the most reasonable)

If you look at what they say my real life non lab experience is so far removed from the American Apple Dream

Even with the same settings mentioned here -

after 2 hrs into Inherent Vice battery is down to 52 % from 100 - Movie purchased and watched in Apple TV screen at 50% brightness no other apps open and the HD movie was downloaded on device.

Based on real world usage you can watch video content for 4 Hrs not 10 hours

Its a no brainer that all companies exaggerate specs / performance but this is sadly another example of Apple mis selling and mis describing their products.
