The 12.9 is heavy and unwieldy, it really is only usable in a tabletop setting, so you might as well just use a laptop and have 100x the functionality

I have a stand that I can tilt and maneuver in any direction I want. I can use it in bed, on the sofa or chair, or whatever.

I love my IPP 12.9. As a teacher I use it to plan lessons. Writing on a IIP 12.9 is so much fun. I love the size because it's the same as an A4 paper what is very important for me. I never type with keyboard, i always write with apple pencil. I love handwriting and Evernote/GoodNote is a perfect partner for me. Using two apps at the same time is very comfortable with the IPP 12.9. On the left side i search with safari/reading pdf books and on the left side i can easy take notes (with pencil). I think the 10.5 is great but for me the size of the IPP 12.9 is so important. Watching movies or reading a books was never a problem for me.

If you love handwriting with apple pencil take IPP 12.9!

+1

I want to use the iPP for pretty much the same thing and tried them both today hoping that the 10.5 would be the perfect choice. And the 10.5 is much nicer to hold and handle with one hand but it does not feel half a useful when it comes to 50/50 split screen with research/reading + taking notes.

The smaller screen makes it a bit hard to read websites w/o zooming in and writing is less efficient and it´s just a lot more scrolling needed for everything. I wrote 20 words and it took 4 rows on the 10.5" but only 3 rows to write the same text on the 12.9". When it comes to reading from iBooks the bigger screen seems to show about 15-20% more text/page, just from comparing that the smaller screen was at page 15 when it showed the same as the bigger one did at page 12 or 13.

In small numbers it might not sound like much but writing the same text over 400 rows instead of 300 and adding 50-60-70 extra page turns to every book is a lot of extra scrolling and hand movement.

The 10.5" still works but it´s just not perfect in the same way as the 12.9", that one is amazing for this use case. :)

It looks like maybe, for productivity and notes, that the surface pro is preferred?

You're holding a 12.9" iPad with the keyboard and cover on with one hand? You don't even need to go to the gym with that bicep workout

No

I'm talking holding it without a case. Why would you be holding it one or two handed with the Smart Keyboard? Goes against the point of its usage

Holding the 12.9 naked is hardly a problem but when you have Smart Cover and keyboard you don't need to be holding it
