I may be repurposing my 2017 MacBook for my kids soon, but I'm a little afraid for the keyboard longevity, since they may not be as careful with it as I have been.

I purchased some uber thin keyboard covers and to my pleasant surprise, the typing feel with that on isn't terrible. The only issue is that it isn't stuck on, so if you brush it at the corners, it can lift up. Nonetheless, they can definitely keep some dust out.

However, even though it's so thin, I'm wondering if it can damage the screen. Do you have any experience with these with the 12-inch MacBooks?

It should be fine. I've always had a thin keyboard cover on my 2017 12-inch Macbook, and any impression it leaves on the screen can be easily wiped away with a slightly damp paper towel.
