I still have an iPhone X. The Space black model then had something similar to DLC on the stainless steel band, so you did not get scratches as you would on regular polished stainless. Three years later, mine is 100 percent brand new in appearance besides maybe some dust in the charge port.

Do any of the 12 pro models have a similar type coating on the stainless steel band?

Thanks so much!

steel is steel - it will scratch when it comes in contact with other metals or objects; No coating can avoid it. But again, its steel so it has the max hardness to protect the phone from accidental falls or bumps.

True but the DLC was pretty much magic on the black phones and Space Black Apple Watches. The polished shiny stainless, just like OG iPods, you pretty much touch and scratch.

Guess I'll be waiting to see what people report.

I assume the outer finishes are no different then what are on the current iPhone 11 lineup just flat vs rounded. The Silver will be most susceptible to wear but you can always polish out any minor imperfections for the most part. The colored options have the coatings which do help prevent wear however once they chip or scratch there is no fixing them. In my experience I have had no issues with the phones with the PVD coatings.

The scratches would definitely bother me as I wanted Silver. But it's just one of those things you can't avoid that I'll need to learn to accept. I may still go with silver or graphite, though I wish the regular 12 had more RAM. I like the color choices for the 12 more than pro and the aluminum finish seems a bit more durable to micro scratches.

If you are that worried about micro scratches between your options go Graphite.

It seems that this year all the Pro models get the PVD coating. Joz says that at 47:02 in the event. That means all the colors should be equally durable now, even the silver.

All iPhone 12 Pros have PVD on the stainless steel, on the back glass and the stainless steel, including the silver option.

I have the Green 11 Pro Max and the stainless looks as good as it did on day one, and I have had mine since last September. I also have the SS Series 4 Apple Watch with no real scratches either

I am pretty sure you cannot PVD coat glass. I guess I could be wrong, but I think the back glass is just glass. I really hope it’s easier to fix this time, though I doubt it. We’re still probably looking at over $500 if you break the back glass.

No. The back of the iPhone 11 Pro and the newer models have PVD on the back glass, that’s why the back of my iPhone held up better than the front even though the back has been on grittier surfaces.

If you Google or just watch the 2019 keynote, Phil Schiller himself said: “The back is a single piece of machine glass with an optical PVD coating.”

the Space gray model of the iphone X had the PVD coating. Just like the XS and 11 Pro's. I'm sure they would for the 12 Pro's as well.

I didn't know it either but for the 11 Pro/Max it actually does have PVD on the back glass.

How durable is PVD??? on Apple Watch?
It’s not as good as DLC, but should still provide better wear and scratch resistance. PVD is only on gold and DLC for graphite, space black, and space black titanium. Silver has no coating on Apple Watch.

Silver for iPhone X to iPhone 11 Pro don’t have any coating, except for the silver iPhone 12 Pro. All the finishes have PVD

I guess I'll consider Silver again. I don't expect it to be like scratch free but any reduction would be great.

Interesting...I am surprised they went with the coating on the Silver. It seems all we have to go off of is what was said in the keynote...don't see any mention of this on the site (unless of course I missed it).

The site makes no mention of PVD at all for the iPhone 12 Pro page. At least when I last looked at it.

I would like to confirm as that would potentially alter my decision on color. I have always like the Silver phones but always turned off by the non-coated polished stainless as I am picky about micro scratches. Hopefully we can get some more clarity around this before I preorder the Pro Max.

It’s probably because it’s a flat surface that is a mirror. The curved steel distorts reflections so it was harder to see blemishes. Terrible theory, I know 🥺🎻

True, but Joz did say it in the keynote. And I strongly believe that PVD on the back glass of the iPhone 11 Pro was also not mentioned on their website. They also didn’t mention the back glass having PVD for the iPhone 12 Pro, Joz only said after revealing the new finishes and saying the PVD will retain the steel’s luster.

Since the event had to be scripted, I’m sure Joz was referring to all finishes having PVD. He was talking about it when revealing the finishes, the steels should have a PVD coating and the back glass should have optical PVD coating

I really hope that's true. I've always wanted a silver Pro but was discouraged by non-coated stainless steel.
