Merely saying it has been covered a million times to prepare the OP in receiving a whole bunch of options that may contradict each other.

It depends what you're used to. I've always preferred smaller notebooks so I love my 12" PowerBook, no it's not too small and I wouldn't change it.

I've got a 15 inch Powerbook and I wouldn't have it any other way. The widescreen is especially useful for flash and video editing, not to mention watching widescreen video or DVDs. My roommate's HDD just died and he decided he'd rather get a 14 inch ibook after using a 12 inch PB for quite some time. Personally, I would definitely recommend something over 12 for anything but casual internet use, which I have friends who use it for just that and don't mind at all, however.

Even though I don't like the 12" PB, atleast you can connect it on a large external display for dual monitors.

Buddy, 12 inches is way too small. So is the 14 in ibook. So is the 15 and 17 ib pb. What you need is the 30in cinema HD display. It's the only screen that has the aspect ratio sufficient for the movies and apps you've listed.

HTH.

Im not talking major league editing. Just simple stuff. Is it utterly impossible or can it be done. Again the small screen in mind.

Sure it can be done, you could edit video on an OQO (see http://www.oqo.com if you dont know what im talking about) by using Premiere. It's just personal preference, if you would want to do it on that small of a screen. The 1024x768 resolution would work just fine if thats what your getting at; since you won't be doing pro editing anyway.

If you went pro, you would probibly want a display that could do 1920x1080 or so at least (for 1080p video previewing); but chances are you don't even have a camera that goes that high anyway, so you can safely ignore that bit :)

Edit: Forgot to mention (personal preference thing here) but you might want to check out how working with a 12 inch is for some time if you didn't already do this... With a 12inch (or smaller, like the 10.6 viao's) I always end up having a "problem" when I use the mouse that my right hand comes of the resting part of the notebook; and eventualy I end up with a slight pain in the middle of the right palm where the edge of the case was everytime I used the mouse.

Aren't you dudes not supposed to be on Apple related forums? Or am I mistaken?

I USED to work there.

And no, Apple employees are not supposed to be on forums, but it never stopped me before. They are worried about us giving out secrets...but lemme, tell ya...Apple Retail Employees know JACK about new releases.

Love my 12" PB. Never had an issue with screen brightness, reading absolutely no problem (lots of work-related pdfs, as well as all the posts at MRF) and portability is just awesome. Simply amazing to have so much computer in such a small package. Only thing I miss (sort of) is the wide screen display, but if I need/want that I can always go to my 17" iMac, and it's not enough of a desire for me to go for a 15" PB. I've rarely ever bought something that I'm still so happy with so much after the purchase. Have been very pleased with this baby and wouldn't change it.

I thought 12"iBook would be too small, but it ended up being large enough for my needs (plenty of movie watching, but no editing). In fact, because it is 1024x768 resolution on such a small screen, it ends up looking much crisper than I'm used to.

Keep in mind im talking about screen size ;)

Im a soon to become an Apple man. Been a Windows man for years, but thought that with my purchase of a 12" compact notebook, I would give Apple a try.

I was just wondering if any 12" users out there find their 12" powerbook/ibook to small?
What do you use it for, and when would you wish you had chosen the 15"/14" versions, if ever?

Thanx

When I first decided to get a iBook 12" I thought it was wayyy too small when i checked it out at the apple Store. I wanted a 14" but i still got the 12".
I am soo glad i stuck with the 14", its more compact and easy to take around., My friend got a 14" and its wayy too bigg and bulky to me, If you want a larger screen the pbooks are better (to me).

Owned both the 12" and 15" PB.

The 12" is great for travelling.. the small screen isn't noticable when your using it. Great battery life... can't complain for the price and everything that's packed inside. You can always hook up external display if your planning on using it at home.

15" is my current setup. Prefer the overal bigger screen size where i can use everywhere. Widescreen is great for movies for when your out of town. Overall... better features IMO, backlite keyboard, PCMCIA slot, Battery quick swapping, widescreen, 128mb vram, 2gb max ram... Kills the back if you carry it on the go in a bag... but carrying it on the outside isn't all that bad.

My vote goes to 15" as desktop replacement
My vote goes to 12" as everyday traveller

Finally I have arrived.....
As previous posters said, 12" PB or 12" iBook has hit a right balance for portability, compactness, and performance. I am typing this with my 12" iBook. My 12" PB and 15" PB are connected to ACDs. If you need a larger screen space, then, ACD should be an ideal choice. I feel if a 12" is too small for what you need to do, a 15" will not cut it either. Also, watching movies on the notebook is not as good as you watch it with an external wide screen LCDs. When I need to watch movies, I will go with my 15" PB with a 23" ACD for better viewing.

Depends. I love my 12" Powerbook and wouldn't go an inch bigger, but I would recommend getting a second screen (I'm still saving) or desktop machine with a screen if you plan on a lot of image editing, etc. The 12" won't kill you though. For example, I'm working a project with 2 Adobe illustrator files, a web page in Dreamweaver, 4 or 5 Photoshop files and a few web sites all open together (Expose is your friend) and while it's cramped, I can keep the files I need all lined up and use Expose to switch quickly between those not in immediate use. I will admit a 23" screen would be perfect though.

I dont mind the 12" screens. I would go for the 14" If I had the $$$ though.

I think my 12'' is perfect. Although many people believe it is too small, on everyday use I really dont notice it. Its not as if the resolution is 800x600 or anything. Its still a good resolution and it is also the "standard" resolution that websites are usually made.

With Expose it makes it alot easier. Unlike how in Windows it could become troublesome finding windows, Expose can display all of them effortlessly.

I also love my 12'' because of the portability factor, which is very important for almost all college student. Its priceless when you're lugging around a textbook, lab book, and a binder. The 12'' comes extremely in handy in the lecture halls as well when space is NOT easy to come by. I see people with 15'' PB and 14'' iBooks are entirely cluttered up by their laptops and unable to really do anything else.

Honestly, yes. I have a little buyer's remorse that I didn't buy the 14 inch. But, I do use it as my primary computer. It gets hard when you're staring at it for hours on end every day.

But, it's not that bad. Not bad enough for me to get rid of it and buy a new one, but when I do end up buying a new one, I'll definatly get a bigger one.

I would just buy a dekstop, because I never really bring it anywhere, but I like having the ability to do so if need. Had I had a dekstop, I would have never brought it with me when I left New Orleans, since I thought I would be heading back in a couple days, but since I had a laptop I just tossed it in my bag and took off. Not that I think it will ever happen again, but the mobility I love.

But yeah. 12 is a little too small to use as a main computer.

A tip if you want to use the 12" iBook for watching movies is to invest $19 in one of these and a couple of cables. That's what I used when my old DVD player broke.

Edit: Maybe you'd rather spend DKK 169 from here. ;)
