So I unboxed a space grey 14” MBP today and I noticed a little spot where the coating has been damaged near the trackpad. It’s very small, but I can spot it easily. I’m not sure what to do with this, as I always had silver MBP’s before this. Is this normal with the space grey MBP’s? It kind of bothers me, but I’m not sure if there is a point in returning if every space grey MBP has some imperfections. I don’t mind small scratches when I make them myself, but I do like my MacBook to be free of them when I purchase it new. Has anyone else noticed these spots on their new space grey MBP?

Look for this thread:

It's normal.

They produced this laptops in a hurry. Only way they could push out so many 512/1 TB Pro models on release date.

My M1 Pro 16" has 2 scratches and one mark. For this high price it's a shame. Don't be sad. The aluminium is oxidating very fast :D. You wont see this marks long time. Even a few minutes usage of my m1 is lefting marks of my hands on the top cover beside the track pad.

I had never bought space grey. It's very sensitive. The ipad pro with space grey has permanent traces even if i used a wet cloth for soft cleaning. The quality of the anodization is pretty crap. The layer is too thin.

If it bothers you, just return it. Apple will honor it if you return it within the no-questions-asked 14-day return window...
Yeah, I’m just not sure if it’s worth trying another space grey or if I should go for silver.

Apple's QA is pretty reliable. I'm sure if you return it and opt for another space grey, it will be perfectly fine.
You know the thing is that this was already a replacement for another 14’’ that also had scratches. But I suppose I’ll try it a third time.

I had a full on scratch right out of the box on the exposed corner of a 16" Max. I took it back and was lucky my local apple store had a replacement

I will return mine too. This laptops are too expensive for accepting such a bad flaw. But if i would get scratches and marks several times i would give up buying new M1 pro's. If the quality control is bad at foxconn, there is no reason for buying it x times to get one perfect out of the box. 16 gb ram and only 5 tflops gpu for ~3000 Euros is joke enough. I don't need additional flaws. I would buy 32 gb ram and max gpu. But it's not available in Germany. Only the 16 gb m1 pro variant.

Not Foxconn, Quanta Computer. I don't think Foxconn is making these laptops...

Well, considering your luck, your next one is most likely gonna have imperfections as well... just open it in the store, so you can ask for another one straight after that if you ain't happy!

Haha yeah the store might want me to do that as well. I’m trying another space grey so wish me luck.

I predicted it. This Apple laptops have a pretty bad qc. I was about to order M1 Max, but i would only order it without spending my money in advanced. The chances are high i will get a M1 Max with scratches. So its better there would be an invoice option.

Honestly, if you want some insurance you should go for silver.

Mine had a small scuff on the bottom casing of the aluminum. I was able to mostly 'buff' it out with my finger a bit presumably something painted hit it and caused the blemish. Very minor, but I exchanged it anyway. Too expensive to have any sort of visible defect out of the box IMO.

I haven't actually unboxed the exchanged model yet... So I hope that one doesn't have any worse defects.

I agree, these products are way too expensive to have to deal with these kind of problems out of the box. I’d suggest you unbox your exchanged model so that if there is any damage, you’ll be able to exchange it easier, rather than waiting a few days.

@Vazor

I tried silver model. It had several scratches and marks too. Also the aluminium is cheap quality. Handprints and cleaning with wet soft cloth are burned into it. This quality is a joke for such high priced product. Also i predict that this glossy display surface is very easy damageable. It's like this oled tvs with evaporated ag coating. Everything is lefting microscratches. Also a very soft cotton cloth.

I remember this photo:

You can see the ag coating has been damaged.
