Yeah I think pretty much all macs have a certain number of charge cycles out of the box for testing purposes, my made to order iMac had 5 charge cycles out of the box… so I think that’s normal.

But I am certainly convinced that Apple must refurb and resell returns as new… for example when I returned a brand new sealed iPad to an Apple store once, they actually removed the cellophane and inspected the device before issuing a refund… so basically they lost like 30% of the retail value of that brand new item by choice… I am almost certain that would have been resealed and sold as new…

Yeah Samsung does the same. It’s far to expensive otherwise.

So I unboxed a space grey 14” MBP today and I noticed a little spot where the coating has been damaged near the trackpad. It’s very small, but I can spot it easily. I’m not sure what to do with this, as I always had silver MBP’s before this. Is this normal with the space grey MBP’s? It kind of bothers me, but I’m not sure if there is a point in returning if every space grey MBP has some imperfections. I don’t mind small scratches when I make them myself, but I do like my MacBook to be free of them when I purchase it new. Has anyone else noticed these spots on their new space grey MBP?

Relax, your computer is going to have a bunch of them within a year, especially around the MagSafe port; this is why I only buy silver MacBooks, they simply age better.

Yeah it definitely isn’t cost effective for Apple to have a 14 day no quibble returns policy, plus remove cellophane from brand new returns in store etc… it’s far too expensive to consistently do this IMO…

Finally got my 16" M1 Max this week and sure enough had a small "bubble" of paint missing on the lid. Not going to stress it at all. I'm sure I'll do worse after a few months of wear and tear. Obviously it's unfortunate but after waiting a little over 2 months not worth it to get back in queue for a replacement and risking something even worse over such a small imperfection.

I would definitely still contact Apple though as you may get a % back on it

I am actually convinced that Apple resell returned units as new, especially when the marks are really minor, as some people will just accept it whereas others won’t.
Good point. I remember my brand new MBP M1 having 4 charge cycles out of the box. Was bought and shipped from Costco.
Pretty sure it would be illegal for Apple to resell them as new unless they're returned unopened. It's normal for batteries to have multiple cycles when new, even when a new model comes out and can't have been returned before you got it.

As for the seeming decline in quality control, that's been a theme in the discussions here with every new model forever. It always seems that way because these defects are unusual, but when they happen to you, then you notice. If quality control were really declining the way people have thought, Apple would be selling almost nothing but defective machines by now.

It’s not just limited to MacBooks I see… this is happening an awful lot with Apples products lately (this is a UK reviewer on YouTube)

my advice is to enjoy your devices and not stress over such minute things

I feel apple takes a large brunt of this old behavior. You don't ee this in any other category (cars, homes, etc) where people expect a full on replacement

The problem isn’t so much the imperfections it’s the fact Apple charge more than competitors with pretty much all their products so people expect premium quality for their premium price tags… if Apple want to be a general run of the mill tech company and settle for imperfections such as this then they should really lower their pricing, then maybe people will start to chill out about small imperfections here and there.
