Oh, that's interesting! As in my previous reply the crashes happen with either tab layout on one machine thus I haven't tested the other nine machine with other tab layouts. For me, this consistently causes the crash exactly as you stated, right when the bottom of the video passes "under" the semi-transparent Safari toolbar. HOWEVER, this consistency occurs only when I'm in separate tab mode. When I switch to compact mode, it does not crash most of the time.
Ay, sorry I missed your comment about it happening with both tab layouts. I've got a 10-core 16" Max (32 GPU cores) with 32GB RAM, 1TB SSDOh, that's interesting! Can you please confirm your config, please? (lcd size, cpu, cpu cores, GPU cores, ram, ssd) Thanks!
How long until this is available to the general public?I haven't tested this extensively, but it looks like this bug is fixed in today's dev release of macOS 12.1 (build 21C5031d).
did you end up returning ?It took a while longer for me to reproduce in Chrome but the steps seem to be this:
1. Play HDR video in Youtube
2. Make video full screen
3. Reduce back to smaller size to view comments
4. Scroll up and down through comments varying scroll speed
5. Repeat 2-4 and it usually will eventually lock up and the machine will restart
I noticed that if I have more apps open, it happens more quickly.
Compact tabs it will remain for me.
I have dark mode enabled in the MAC system preferences. Has anyone returned their Macbook for a new one and the issue persisted? Are you using macOS or YouTube dark mode? I found that stopped crashes more consistently than compact tabs.
Unfortunately I don’t think it’s this simple. I was the first to suggest this solution, as I noticed compact view definitely helping on my machine. It prevents crashes 9/10 times for me, but it’s not perfect. Others have reported crashes with other browsers such as Chrome and Brave, so it seems the issue is not specific to the Separate tab coding.Being that Monetary was supposed to default safari tab view to Compact view - until they gave people the option for separate view do you think there is just an issue with the coding for the separate tab view which causes the crash? I have tried several HDR videos on compact tabs and no crashes at all.
I tried this today using YouTube dark mode (not macOS) and have not been able to produce a crash (so far), so this is promising. Using compact view I've had one crash out of maybe 50 attempts. I'm going to keep experimenting with dark mode to get a larger sample size. Are you using macOS or YouTube dark mode? I found that stopped crashes more consistently than compact tabs.
Was it not happening before ?Finally able to crash my 14" 10/16/16 using Chrome. Scrolled down in full screen at 8K HDR and crashed within 2 seconds. Unable to reproduce in Safari @4K HDR. I am using dark mode FYI.
I tried the Peru video before and it didn't happen in Chrome. It does now.Was it not happening before ?
At least we are in this together. Hoping there’s a fix soon.I tried the Peru video before and it didn't happen in Chrome. It does now.
Welcome to the club and thanks for sharing. Just to clarify, are you using the systemwide macOS dark mode, or just the dark mode setting on YT's website? Finally able to crash my 14" 10/16/16 using Chrome. I'm using macOS dark mode. It only crashes on Chrome for me which could either be cuz Safari doesn't support 8K HDR on YT or cuz I couldn't scroll when playing the video full screen. I tried it with 1Blocker in Safari disabled and it doesn't crash. Sticking to Safari has finally paid offWelcome to the club and thanks for sharing. I solely use Safari for my browsing unless a website is Private Relay incompatible and the screen is only ~4K so I won't be facing the issue at all in the future. Hope they fix the issue soon. It's a shame that these mighty machines are being brought to their knees over a simple video. At least we are in this together. Hoping there’s a fix soon.
It's crashing in Safari for some of us though at 2160 resolution.I'm using macOS dark mode. are you playing the HDR videos on 2160 60k and you have to scroll slowly up and down from the video and the comments. I'm in compact tabs - so I don't have it anymore.I tried really hard to make my m1pro 14 crash.
Playing this videos slowly scrolling, going full screen and back.
Turning off compact tabs.
Exiting dark mode.
Still can't crash this thing.
Yes tried that and rock solidare you playing the HDR videos on 2160 60k and you have to scroll slowly up and down from the video and the comments. I'm in compact tabs - so I don't have it anymore.
