Keep me updated.
Actually the discomfort arises when I place my wrists on the bottom edge of the 16. It’s sharp and not rounded. The actual typing experience with my fingers is fine. If I had larger hands or longer fingers, I suppose it would be better because then the bottom of my palms would be resting on or near the edge. This does not look like something I can remedy. I put on a long sleeve sweater and that helped but that’s not a long term solution.

I’ve also adjusted my seat so I sit higher and thereby making my wrists and forearms parallel with my desk and the 16 but it’s not making any difference. I think the added thickness of the 16 creates this weird typing angle where your wrist, even part of your forearm, is pressed against the edge.

So you think you’ll be returning the 16”?

By the way, what specs did you get?

base-model (16/512), still deciding but now leaning towards the 14. and I'm going to wait to hear from others how their 14 battery is holding up. The 16 feels very large, but I literally have it placed next to the 14 so maybe it feels larger than it really is. Will play with each separately and away from each other.

What about something like a padded wrist-rest?

It’s not a very good solution, but if you’re sitting at a desk, I’d recommend using an external keyboard. This goes for any laptop. I find it’s much more comfortable, and only use the laptop keyboard if I’m not at my desk.

Does space grey loses the colour over the time?
It shouldn’t but if you are the kind of person who carries it in a bag without wrapping it in a cloth or placing it in a sleeve, over time you will get tiny scratches in places like the corner caused by side to trackpad or side to tapered top and bottom. Those will be more noticeable with space grey than silver.

I can confirm this. I’m not gentle with my machines.

Yeah, same will be true around the ports unless you are precise when plugging. I can only imagine how brutal my 2014 would look if it were SG because I slide my USB plug slightly across the surface until I find the port, there’s a bit of shininess at the actual port corner but the sides look surprisingly good for the age and abuse.

With regard to the size choice, we should also consider that the notch size is the same on both models, so you basically have more menu bar space on the 16-inch MPB

If I had to choose between the two, I’d go with the 16. Seems like better value at the base-model levels — cooler/more quiet/better thermals, significantly better battery, larger and more immersive screen.

I (almost certainly unnecessarily) went with 64GB, because I want to have this for a long time and I don't want to ever believe that I'm limited by RAM.

I hope you don’t feel limited by 64 GB. If you do, desktops can offer more. Hopefully M2 series will be able to offer more in laptops as well.

Ha I hope I don't also! Basically I just knew that it's not upgradeable and I'd prefer not to have to upgrade my computer solely for RAM in a couple years so I wanted to max out. I've never had more than 16GB before, and so far I haven't come close to 100% usage on the new one (and maybe I never will!) but I'm loving it nonetheless.

14" for me as my personal computer...most people have external monitors but I like being able to easily move the computer and take it wherever I go and this one seems to hit the sweet spot of perfect size for that.

Do you think 16gb of RAM will be enough for general computing? I’m looking to get back into street photography, using only my iPhone, so will likely use Lightroom.

I am using Lightroom on the M1 Macbook Air 16GB / 512GB and an extra monitor. Works great. Or get a Mac Mini with 16GB and a monitor. The Lightroom experience with a good monitor will be much better than with a Macbook Pro screen.

I ordered the base-model for 14 and 16. I typically upgrade every other year so I am fine with the base-models and so far, it is over-kill for my non-Pro needs. I will be using it for very basic tasks and occasional video editing. Coming from the M1 MBP, the 14 feels much more familiar and comfortable when typing. The 14 screen is still wonderful but it's not as immersive as the 16. Plus the battery is not as good. I'll continue to use both for another day or so and make my decision.
have u made your decision ? if yes what is it and base on what arguments?

For "general computing" buy a used MacBook or Mini for $400 somewhere and you're golden. I was using a 2012 13" i7/8GB RAM/512GB SSD Retina MBP for my consulting work for a few months while I waited for Apple to launch the new MacBooks. I paid $300 for it (Canadian) and am about to sell it for $350. Perfect laptop for high school students or as you say, general computing purposes.

I mean if you want the new 16" MBP by all means buy one. I'm loving my 14" but it was a total splurge.

I do nothing that would ever come close to taxing the M1 Pro CPU (mine is the full fat 10 core one too with 1TB flash and 16GB RAM) but I've been waiting for years since my 2015 15" died in 2018 (logic board) and I have my own business, so it's a write-off :)

If you buy the 16" M1 Pro base with 1TB storage, you won't need another computer for 10 years.

Why didn't u settle for the base 14 then ?

Because I fell into Apple's trap (willingly). I wanted 1TB storage, and then it was just a bit more for the full M1 Pro CPU. Frankly it was the only way to get one on Oct 26 and not wait a month for a special config.

I bought my daughter the base 14" on the same day as well (and my mother in law the M1 Air a couple weeks earlier - it was a nasty October).

I suspect I'll trade with my daughter at some point as she's actually using the Adobe suite and other video editing apps for her university degree and work. So she can actually benefit, albeit slightly, from the extra processing power.

I wouldn’t go for an old generation M1, now that the new models are here.

And I quite like laptops.

Appreciate the advice.

Do you think 16gb RAM would suffice, or would you place an order and wait for a 32gb model to be delivered?

Seems like they have the 16gb model available in stores for sale. They just happened to have sold out when I got there, but they will have more stock tomorrow.
The Air and Mini and 13"MBP are not older generation M1. The M1 has the same cores as the M1 Pro / Max. They are all of the same generation. The Pro / Max are just beefed up with more cores for heavy duty processing use cases.

It definitely doesn't sound like you have any use cases that would require the pro/max level of performance. You would be paying twice as much for power that you would not use just for the appearance of "newer" tech.
