The 12" was the sweet spot for the frequent international traveller, sadly it was overpriced by Apple and lacked performance. That said was perfect as an ultra portable easily beating out the competition in the same class. Would be ideal to bring back the 12" with Apple Silicon nor hike up the price as is just a basic notebook.

Q-6
Totally with you on this. I still use my MacBook 12" from 2016 as my light computer when I travel or just need to do some light tasks. It's a beautiful machine. If only Apple used that design to create something nice with M chips.

A month back I went from 14 to 16. It’s absolutely as you’d expect - the 16 is noticeably heavier but the space is really useful while working remotely. I don’t fly much.

Both are excellent, I like them equally and the tradeoffs mean I don’t have a preference. It’s a total toss up.

Observations on my three portable Macs -

Macbook Pro 14
Good:
  • Fast
  • SD card reader
  • No Touchbar
  • Runs cool
  • Good battery life under load (though well below Apple's claims)
  • Reasonable size compromise
Bad:
  • Lots of my software doesnt work, limiting the computers usefulness
  • Battery is degrading faster than any Mac I've had since 2010.
  • Battery discharges even when the computer is "off". (I suspect it doesnt actually fully turn off)
  • Poor standby battery life - it's like something from 2006.
  • Build quality suspect compared with older unibody Macbooks - worse alignment and finish
  • WiFi can be unreliable
  • Autoboot BS cant be disabled
  • I hate much about newer versions of MacOS
  • I cant find a slipcase I like for it
Macbook Pro 15 (2019 - i9 w/Vega 20)
Good:
  • Fast - feels no slower than the above
  • Works with all my software
  • *Excellent* standby battery life
  • Apple's Leather slip cover
Bad:
  • Too big to carry around daily
  • Touchbar
  • Runs hot under even light loads
  • The keyboard's reputation concerns me, though it's not been a problem for me.
Macbook 12 (2017 - i7)
Good:
  • The perfect display size for portability
  • Battery has held up great
  • I'm very comfortable with the feel of the keyboard - it still sees by far the most use of the three
  • Very good standby battery life
  • No Touchbar
  • Apple's Leather slip cover
Bad:
  • Single port is really annoying.
  • Slow to boot.
  • The keyboard's reputation concerns me, though it's not been a problem for me.
  • Games run slower than on a 2010 Macbook Air.
  • Even with maxed out storage config - it's not enough.
  • Software frequently has UI elements cut off vertically (probably due to devs not testing on 12")
  • Have run into display driver compatibility issues (probably due to devs not testing on 12")
