If you don't seem to be CPU or GPU bound, I'd be inclined to make the switch now.Your M1 Air isn't going to gain any value by waiting, and given that you are mostly RAM limited, it's not clear to me that the M2 version is going to make or break your workflow. Upgrade to a 32GB M1 Pro now and avoid some months of being hurt by not enough RAM.
That's been my thinking. It's VERY rare CPU that I'm ever limited by usually more RAM or GPU depending on the machine I'm working on. Even if I get the Pro or first level of Max that should have me set for YEARS to come.

As others have said, there may not be a new 14” this year. But we don’t know for sure.

F your productivity is suffering or fan noise drives you crazy then jump onboard. If not, def wait.

I have to think some 3nm (M3?) variants will be shipping by WWDC next year (even with delays) so Apple will probably soon update existing M-based offerings to at least Avalanche/Blizzard cores - or hopefully whatever cores are in A16.

Everyone trying to guess the cadence of Apple M-based updates will still be guessing after the next gen starts shipping because we still won't know if covid/supply chain delays impacted that first cadence cycle.

I can get a MBP14 8core-32GB RAM for $250-off at my local Microcenter. I'm thinking of upgrading from my M1 Air for two main reasons. Screen size and RAM. the CPU itself has been fine so I don't see real to upgrade to the 10-core. My heaviest workload is some Photoshop with a few layers while multitasking, which often takes me on the verge of the 16GB I have now.

I'm debating on whether it would be better for me to just upgrade now and take advantage of the sale and re-sell my Air, or just wait for the M2. I obviously I don't NEED a machine, but I'm thinking of how in a couple years I'll be wanting more than 16GB as I'm sure apps will be eating up the little bit of headroom I have now.

I found that the Air products do not last as long as the Pro products. They become slow so much faster.
I suggest buying the M1 Pro now so you can enjoy it, and then upgrade to the M3 or M4 in some years ahead.
