For those in the UK give mr memory a try, they have very good prices from top brands.

MR-MEMORY

currently 16g [204 Pin SO DIMM DDR3 PC3-8500 1066MHz] including VAT and delivery is £142.08, thats over £100 saving from 4 months ago when I last checked.
Remember you can always sell your existing ram on ebay, someone will buy it :)

I've been running on 16GB in my 2010 27" i7 for a few days now, OWC-branded memory, and no issues whatsoever. I talked to an OWC representative tonight that said that they'd made a change that's since fixed the issue. Just FYI; you may want to go to their site and try the live chat to ask further to see if something can be done about RAM purchased earlier.

Hi Macginger, thanks for passing that on. Again, when I clicked through all the questions of which mac, etc, they look a bit of a lottery 'We will supply one of the major worldwide memory manufacturers which include: Samsung, Hynix, Infineon, Nanya, Elixir.'

Hi there guys,

After reading all this post I am a bit scared about upgrading my late 2009 to 16GB.

Does this problem affect both late 2009 and mid 2010 i7 or just mid 2010?

Anyone running 16GB in a late 2009?

thanks

I started experiencing some random shutdowns on my 2010 iMac i7 this week. I was just browsing the whirlpool forum on Google Chrome and it just shut down. I'm using 16GB of OWC's NuRAM.

I contacted OWC about this and they admitted that the fault was significant enough for me to get an exchange, with paid return shipping (from Australia via Fedex). They are going to replace it with their own brand of RAM (not NuRAM). They mentioned to me that the problem may be to do with the programming on the chips, but they're not fully sure.

So I'll have to wait and see when the OWC RAM arrives.

Hi takamine, sorry to read about your problems. As someone keen to upgrade to 16GB like a lot people I would be grateful if you could post a picture of what OWC send you so I can see if I can find a European/British dealer with the same. :) Best of luck.

I suspect I will probably ending up having to order through OWC but it would be good to do some detective work.

*If finding out what they sent involves removing warranty stickers, you obviously don't want to do that, don't worry about it, but a photograph and any paperwork details would still be great.

Someone mentioned the British company Mr. Memory. I had no luck with live chat. After their system or agent said hello and how can I help I got no reply to my question, though I tried twice. I emailed them and was assured by someone named Kerry that they were Mac users, that they know Macs are fussy and that all the memory they supply is 100% compatible and comes with a lifetime warranty. He also gave me a straight answer on my question about whether he could he supply me with the specific Samsung memory that I wanted.

"We supply the top 10 manufacturers in the world which all come with a lifetime warranty.

Our stock is normally Kingston, Hynix or Samsung however as we turn over such a high volume of stock we would be unable to say which one we would supply."

I wrote back and told him that he is missing a sales opportunity to the whole of Europe; I mentioned the many 16GB threads. If he responds favorably I will get back to you.

I bought an i7 27inch w/16gb of RAM and experienced the same random shutdown problem as many of you have. I read dozens of forum entries and thank everyone for posting.

I needed to come back and let everyone know how I solved, or rather Apple, solved this.

I repeated told them to double check the RAM and after doing due diligence and checking everything under the hood, the Apple tech discovered that they had installed the wrong type of RAM. They put the older, slower RAM, which is fine for other systems, but not our ultra new components.

The correct RAM is 1066MHz.

Possibly something that others may check if they have not had any success solving this problem.

Thanks again to everyone for posting! Without your research I wouldn't have known where to start! :D

Am I understanding correctly that Apple says you have to use, when using 16 Gig ram , the 1066Mhz ram instead of the 1333 Mhz ram they are officially stating as requirements for the mid 2010 i5/7 iMacs?

I hardly can believe it. Means that a lot of people bought the wrong type of ram.
And is this 16 G of 1066 Mhz ram really working in these late iMacs without any sudden shutdowns?

Hi Macginger, thanks for passing that on. Again, when I clicked through all the questions of which mac, etc, they look a bit of a lottery 'We will supply one of the major worldwide memory manufacturers which include: Samsung, Hynix, Infineon, Nanya, Elixir.'

They go on the best price at the time of order so yes you are right on it being a bit of a lottery which manufactured ram you'll get but they are all renowned manufactures so should give you confidence in what your actually buying.

I have been building my own PC's for a few years now and have had nothing but a quality service from them, though that doesn't necessarily mean others haven't, unfortunately thats something I cant comment on as I haven't actually seen any.

yes I dont have an iMac yet but will be ordering 16 gb at the same time when I do, going by the apple stores spec and referencing this against the mr memory drop down options, currently 27inch i5 2010 witch is the same as the i7 2010 the memory given is correct and at a very big reduction to what apple are offering for 16gb.

I only mentioned this company in the hope of helping others in the UK to save a little hard earned money.

But would be great if people could post any negative views to so thank you detosx for raising your concerns mate ;)

"For the iMac (Mid 2010) models, use 2 GB or 4 GB RAM SO-DIMMs of 1333 MHz DDR3 SDRAM in each slot." If Apple have since updated their advice for people wanting to upgrade to 16GB, I would need to see it in print from Apple. The designation is 'PC3-10600 DDR3-1333'.

Unfortunately, having waded my way through many threads about using 16GB of memory in the mid 2010 27" iMac, Samsung (and possibly Hynix) seem to be the only brands to work at 16GB without random shutdowns.

Macginger, thank you for suggesting them, it was worth a try, but unless Mr. Memory can supply you with the brand you ask for, which I have it in writing they say they can not, you are entering a lottery if you own a mid 2010 model. I didn't get any response from their live chat service the two times I asked my question but my subsequent email inquiry was dealt with professionally and, to be clear, it is not my intention to flame a company I have no working experience of, just that they were unable to meet my need in this instance.

Totally understandable and very wise. When you do find a supplier that can deliver/meet your needs would you post and let us UK users know please, always good to have alternative options.

What to do if I have the iMac 27 Ultimate 2010 (just bought last week) with Apple installed 8 GB of ram and may want to upgrade to 16 Gb ?

Do I have to remove the screen to upgrade the ram or can I just open the ram door at the bottom of the iMac screen ?

Thanks for helping :)

Just open the RAM door at the bottom. It will come with instructions in the owner's manual :) It's really pretty easy to do :)

+1. Wasn't going to pay Apple prices for the 16GB. Ordered a Crucial set, and all has been well since November :) Not a crash once.

What kind of Crucial did you get ?
1333 or 1066 MHz ?

Is it hard to upgrade the ram meaning you have to remove the screen glass or just open the ram door at the bottom ?

1333, as Crucial recommended on the system scan when I bought it. And as I already said.... it's easy to do. The instructions are in the book, and you just open the bottom... You should never need to open the screen... :)

On the Apple Discussions forum there is a sixteen page thread entitled 'Late 2010 Core i7 iMac Shutdown' and another ten page one entitled 'Problem with 16GB on 2010 iMac 27" i5 & i7.'

The encouraging thing is that no one seems to be having the 16GB (2010 iMac) random shutdown issue when moving from another brand of 16GB to 16GB Samsung. At the time of writing OWC told me their latest own brand is without the issue. Most people, whatever memory brand used if of the correct spec, had no problems when downgrading to 12GB and 8GB.
