So has anyone else been able to order a 17" MBP with the 7200 RPM option and have it shipping in 1-3 days? I ordered mine this morning with the High-Res Screen and 7200 RPM drive, and it says it will ship June 6-8, and be delivered June 8-13. Could this be an error or do you think some of the first orders placed will be able to receive it immediately?

As the new MacBook Pro's have been upgraded to specs I have wanted for a long time I am going to order one (15" 2.4). However, it it possible order it with a 7200rpm 160GB drive.

Does anybody know what the impact on power consumption / heat / noise is of a 7200rpm 160GB harddisk over a 5400rpm one? As I also intend to play games (HL2 etc) and edit videos; how big a difference would it be performance wise?

The 7200rpm drive will give you a noticable performance improvement. But the
price increase is quite steep which made me go for the 160mb/5400 drive plus
an external 500GB FW800 Drive from Western Digital. Works like a champ, it's
superfast.

The CSR I spoke with today said that if I ordered the 17 MBP w/ the 7200 rpm drive, I wouldn't have to wait for it to ship like with the 15 (I don't know why). I am not looking to get the 17 as it seems too big to be truly portable. I maybe would consider waiting except that I have an Alaska trip coming up in 3-4 weeks and I already sold my 12 inch powerbook over a month ago and need a laptop.

I ordered the same and was a little annoyed with the extended ship date. I'm hoping since I placed mine fast I'll get it sooner and Apple is just trying to play it safe by putting in a later ship date. I do a lot of video/audio editing so I want that extra speed. I'm willing to wait since i'm not in any real rush, but waiting also isn't much fun  Sigh...

I think its rather this test you should look at:

FWIW, I put the 7200.2 160GB in my MBPC2D and it makes all the difference in the world.

You can't compare liek that. You put a third part 7200 drive in. Apple are using Fujitsu drives therefore the difference between the 5400 and 7200 maybe negligible. I do agree however that if you were free to choose the 7200rpm drive that goes in your MBP then it would be a better option but with the stock options its not.
