Also, a lot of people are missing what Jerry was saying. He still was impressed with the durability of the phone. For the most part the paint chip is just at the corners of the phone and around the edges of the camera bump. Other scuffs rubbed out. And also the front screen and back are extremely durable. But I know I wasted my time like typing that. Guess, I will take a break until next year for the next mass hysteria for the iPhone 18 ( I am not upgrading again until the iPhone 19 or 20). But I will pop in to lurk and see post crying about the cost of the rumored foldable next year (2k), or durability of it. Or if there isn't a foldable then folks will default to the " Apple lacks innovation, same old phone, (insert whatever gate here) for people to debate. The cycle never ends.......

I definitely heard the part about plateau. Thinks not done to engineering standards to expect would not chip or hold anodizing. Might have been case where designers won over engineers.

They don’t, a lot of them are justifying there Air purchases. Well they are in great company, well maybe not so much since I can still pick up the air 2 days after it went on sale to the public.

All my phones rock a transparent clear case so this issue is non existent for me. As for the yellowing, I just replace the case yearly coz its cheap.
This. Definitely. I do the same and my IP15 stayed in almost perfect condition. I remember my slate iphone ….5? 6? Got scuffed so much. Kinda reminds me of that .
When I purchased my 15 PM, I decided to go for an Apple authentic/genuine/original case, the iPhone 15 Clear Case with MagSafe. After two years, I see no signs of yellowing — seriously none. And it also doesn’t seem to allow much debris get between the case and the device. The camera bump area has some buildup, though it wiped off.

Previously, I’d always target $5-15 for a phone case, for example, this slim fit clear case with red accents for iPhone X, which yellowed horribly in a few years. It looked like I was a heavy smoker or something — I don’t use any tobacco products.

Is this Apple case worth 5x the cost? I think, it’s more than possible for most. If you get bored easily and like to change cases, probably not.

Anyway… After removing the case again recently, even with it being clear and all, I do enjoy the un-bulked, unobstructed, iPhone better. So, I may go case-less at the three year mark. I think, any light scratching and similar at that point probably doesn’t affect resale value much. With that said, I’m most worried about the display and camera lenses. I don’t think the camera lenses are too at risk with the bumps not allowing them to sit flat on a surface. Honestly, if anything, a tempered glass screen protector would be the way to go. In fact, that’s probably generally the best investment. As much as I dislike cosmetic damage, it’s a strong disappointment, we need to consider these devices as tools, foremost. Sensibly, protecting functionality, a hardened screen protector (e.g., tempered glass) is going to be the most valuable add-on.

Additionally:

go to 5 min to see it happen in real time. I'm looking for a camera skin or camera case
The coin and key tests at 5:05 seem excessive. The loudness of sound and the movement of the iPhone indicates he’s pressing quite hard. A key could contact in such a way where there’s significant pressure, although, I assume that’s not often. The coin wear that he demonstrates would probably not happen for months or years. Nonetheless, he felt the need to use magnification (i.e., microscope) to actually showcase the damage. So, does that imply it’s fairly minute?

Lastly, I carry a lot of stuff in my pockets, so much that I normally use a neck lanyard for my keys. And with all of that stuff, I organize my pockets by item type, basically, what might damage something else, whether that’s keys, liquid (e.g., wet wipes), or other.

That doesn't mean they didn't give you a whole new phone, or refurbished, and charged you $29. Depending on the model thats exactly what they do.
They definitely did not give me a whole new refurbished phone, since they typically charge $99 for that with AppleCare and I got the phone back in two hours with all my data and the same scuffed up front screen lol

This chipping thing is really bothering me, but still I'm waiting on my orange Pro. I hope I will love it and buy an orange case to go with it.

If not, keep my 15 ProMax and wait for next year. This upgrade it not essential, but I DO love the color orange and the photography upgrade.

Designers won what, exactly?

If you hit your car phone etc even after 5 minutes from your unbox it will get hit..so if its 8 hours or 8seconds time dont affects physics
I owned the phone for 8 hours before noticing this. Tough to tell if it came like it or not, but likely given I’d done nothing at all to warrant the chipping

I recently bought a 17 Pro Max in Deep Blue and am now debating whether it’s worth exchanging it for the Silver model. My plan is to use a case right away—as I always do—and I’ve already purchased one of the Spigen cases with a proper plateau cover with precise camera lens cutouts.

However, now I’m concerned about the areas around the camera lenses that protrude through the case’s plateau cover. Even with a protective case, will the Deep Blue (or Orange) finish around the camera rings wear or chip quickly, potentially making the phone look worn or unattractive over time even through a protective case?

Do I seriously need to switch to Silver if I want to avoid worrying about paint chipping or wear specifically around the camera rings? 😭
Yes they will, and yes you do.

Just want to say, you’re not alone.

I had my black 16 Pro for a year, caseless, and not so much as a scratch.

After one day, my 17 Pro has some very tiny chipping on the edge of the camera plateau.

The Pro models are going to wear so badly outside cases because anodising is ****.

Thinking very hard about taking my 17 Pro back and keeping the 16 Pro. The 17 Pros feel like such a step back in this regard.
Keep the 16 Pro. That’s what I did. Bought an Air for my daily instead, very happy with it. 16 Pro can be brought out for holidays / events to capitalise on that nicer camera. Remains a nice backup phone. No need to get 17P this year for me.

I am not making excuses but every year its always a loud group that will zero in on any thing negative they can find to take a crap on Apple and I wonder why they come here or buy apple products if the company sucks so much. I had a 15 pro max and upgraded to the 17 pro max. When the 15 pro max launch two years ago, the internet and these forums where saying titanium felt cheap compared to the iPhone 14’s stainless steel and how easily the titanium scuffed after a few pictures. Also, Jerry Rigs durability test where the 15 pro snaped in his hands with little effort and people melted down. After a while nobody cared and went along using their phones.

That said, I have a deep blue 17 pro max in a dbrand clear ghost case. I feel Apple didn't technically lie about durability. In all the tests I seen the front and back glass take some series damage before cracking. Additionally, the phones themselves have to take serious ( insane) levels of damage before they stop working. While it does suck the phones scuff or scratch easily, I am more concerned with the internals and the phones functioning after a simple drop more so than cosmetic damage. I rather have a cool running phone ( I am kinda of a power user) over a hot running one that looks prestine.

But Apple will probably do what they did with the iPhone 4 anntena gate and sent everyone a free case or something if the internet mob persists. I mean 98% of people out their phones in cases anyway. But let this be a lesson to Apple to not take sort cuts.
I am concerned about cosmetic issues on a £1000+ device that were present or developed the day I started using it. I think that’s reasonable
