Ok so a new application is coming on 26th April and it will be a new purchase. Can anyone run me through the new features available on the X application? Sadly there is no discount or upgrade option for existing premium customers. 1Blocker is now renamed to 1Blocker Legacy.

If if ain't broke, don't fix it call it legacy.

This is indeed being handled rather lamely.

Totally shady and they will also be no longer updating the rules on 'legacy'. So if you bought it then it's just being left to die.

No way I would buy the new one because this WILL happen again when they decide they want more money.

Some here are calling the developers shady because they aren’t offering a free or discounted option for current buyers of the app. There is nothing shady going on. You guys are complaining over nothing.

A lot of businesses don’t offer free or special discounts all the time. Welcome to the real world. Five dollars is nothing, especially when you guys spend a heck of a lot more on a regular basis for coffee, eating out, and other Mac products.

I hear ya. I wouldn’t call it shady, but others may. I call it capitalism and fortunately for all of us, shady business or not, we have the freedom to move on. When a business treats its customers in a manner that they do not like (the reason does not matter), they can expect to lose that business. For the record, I am purchaser of the 1Blocker app for iOS and MacOS who will not be purchasing from this developer again for the exact reason cited. Five bucks is not a big deal to me. This just seems to me like a money grab so I will be looking for another five, six or seven dollar ad blocker that looks like it will be around for a while. Capitalism is good thing and it works both ways. Good for business and good for the customer. Yep, welcome to the real world.

This seems like a cash grab. I think most of us who purchased Legacy would be fine with paying for an in-app purchase to get past the Safari content blocker limitations...but a whole new app for both th Mac and iOS. It begs the question of whether they’ll try to do it again.
I’ll try to contact the developer(s) and why for more information but for right now, I’m looking at new Adblockers.
I wouldn’t call it shady if they publicly showed their ‘supposed’ anti-consumerism. It is, however, our job to vote with our wallets when it comes to stuff like this.

This. I run my own business and before we do anything we think "How would our customers feel?". Why do many of us buy anything? Because of the approval from others and reviews. All of which have now tanked for 1Blocker. They must have realised that people who bought it wouldnt want to pay again and certainly not full price. The fact they are trying to get full price shows they dont care. Dont tell me it's 30% off. Thats an artificial discount that will be permanent after 1 month.

I've tried all the adblockers, bought them all and right now settled on AdGuard (Free). Purify was close second but doesn't remove the white space left by ads, adguard does. Crystal I tried again but they still have their 'acceptable ads' policy which means google ads appear.

Dont you think its ironic how an adblocker has an ad in its own app for its new app [/QUOTE]

I have 1Blocker as a 2nd content blocker app in addition to Adguard which works well.
It would have been better if they offered a free upgrade or in-app purchase for unlocking new features. However, this is not the only app which is selling a separate new version instead of an upgrade.. (Twitterific also did that and few more apps). At least they are not going the subscription route.. which would be a no-no!
Recently, Drafts updated their app calling version 4 legacy and a new subscription-based version 5. Comparing that with 1Blocker's model, I would certainly prefer one-time purchase discounted for existing users instead paying a subscription.

Developers need to do something new to keep their revenue stream coming once the app hits a plateau in terms of new purchases... possibly add more features to the app and charge in-app purchases or launch a new app which most users won't like.

I do not have a problem with "retiring" apps, it is a natural cycle. And considering that it was released in September 2015 it have had a long life, so a paid update seams fine. Future more it is my understanding that they will not disable any functions that the app already have.
That they are not opting for a subscription model is what really matters to me, so I will be supporting them once again, and if the new apps have just as long a lifecycle I will be happy. Remember, this is the better option compared to subscription which will be more expensive in the long run, or a free model where you become the product, either by allow certain adds, or by having access to private information. Nothing is free, you just need to choose your poison.

I am more frustrated by lack of information concerning the macOS app as I am considering buying that, but will hate to get it "retired" in under a year...

Indeed, after reading their clarification about multiple extensions and continuous support of the legacy app, I feel a lot more comfortable to pre-order the new app. Still prefer a subscription model to an uncertain app update lifecycle for a product this nature.

They have also explained the macOS app situation on Twitter.

https://twitter.com/1BlockerApp/status/988521197804642304
"We hear rumors that it may be possible to port native iOS apps to macOS in the near future, so it makes sense for us to wait for a bit before building a brand new Mac app (especially considering our tiny team size)."

I think the rumor is about writing the code once and compiling it for iOS and Mac apps instead of having to re-write a separate code. That's different from merging iOS and MacOS from the UI perspective. Both could still share the code and present a different UI depending on the OS.
What the rumor says could help developers port iOS apps to MacOS and target a larger audience with minimal effort.

I am an adguard user but i am buying this new app. I am very curious.
I am all about supporting good developers and good apps.

Some people think developers are some kind of slaves and dont deserve to get paid.
I love good apps so i pay for them, this way they would provide even better apps FOR US.

And 5 dollars for something that improves imensely my daily life, is a steal.
This kind of apps (the good ones) would easily cost 30 or 40 dollars.

I don’t see a compelling reason to switch from AdGuard Pro.
It is amazing to see almost 50k rules in EACH list.
Now i dont have any problems to block every bit of internet i want.

With adguard (an amazing app too) i was struggling with the 50k rules limit; in the last months i had to disable a lot of lists and rules to comply with the 50k rules limit.

I don’t think it’s shady at all. The developer made a sunbstantial change to the app and is charging for the added functionality. In order to get around Apple’s restriction of 50K rules in a blocker, he re-architected the system so that rules are divided across something like 7 sets of blockers that work together. The result is that you can now have 350K rules instead of 50K. This is something I’m willing to pay for.

** What Hank said. Beat me to it!

For 1blocker X users do if you are not technical can you download the app and pair it with safari and let ir run in the background?

Do you have to mess with it and change things for it to work properly?

No, you don't have to mess with it to get the basic content blocking functionality. You enable it through the Safari > Content Blockers menu just like with others, except you have 7 extensions with 1Blocker X to enable from the beginning. Then you launch the app and enable whatever extensions you actually want to use - block ads, trackers, annoyances, comments and adult sites - and they are provided with up to date rules, presently, but you can add to them if you desire and will be updated over time.

You have a custom menu with additional extensions ie hide elements, block sites, make sites https that requires you to add your own rules through Safari, but by and large, basic functionality is ready out of the box.

I've never used it, but it seems popular and well maintained, no? Do you feel like you need to change? I've only ever used 1Blocker during my time with iOS and have been satisfied. I wouldn't look elsewhere unless necessary..
