Hi all. Am switching from a 2009 MBP, running 15.7 (patch) to a new M2 MBP. The old one runs 1Password6 and I also use iOS (latest) with 1 Password7, they are synched.

Less interested in a subscription due to the higher monthly cost in the EU but I’m struggling to even find the last stand alone version (vs 7?) on the AgileBits site. Have they completed removed it?

Also. I won’t be using Migration Assistent, rather start fresh to transfer files. What’s the best way to port the existing passwords in version 6 over? Through iCloud perhaps?

Cheers

FWIW, 1Password 6 works fine for me in Ventura on my MacStudio M1Max. I store my Agilekeychain in iCloud.
Thanks for your reply, unfortunately I had a plethora of problems with version 6 on my patched OS, including losing/ dissociated the 1Password Mini. Got it back somehow through a previous backup.

So I thought to upgrade to 1Password7 via App Store on my 2009MBP (as I have on iOS), then also installed same on the new MBP and connected to my iCloud backup. This actually led to 1Password containing all info but intrusively displaying a paywall for a subscription. I believed I could pay for the stand alone version of 7?!

I've had way too many nervous events of losing my passwords so I am now trialing the OS X Password functionality. Logins with web address I've so far exported>imported as .cvs, I see that notes can be added to those. Just now have to figure out what to do with software licenses and various non-web based passwords. Perhaps using the Notes App (encrypted) for those?

Seems like you would save way more than the ~$34 EU yearly cost in the time you save finding safe alternatives.
Sure but aside from disliking subscriptions, dependency for passwords therein isn't a road I want to go down. Admittedly I lost functionality due to unsupported software and struggling hardware but I'm put off by the eggs in one basket approach. I did feel more comfortable with a stand alone license though.

Pretty much got web based logins sorted in Ventura's Passwords and now just figuring a solution for the rest. But so far so good. For some reason I was convinced that 1Password 7 was not subscription based.

I'm doing this off of memory so I might not be 100% accurate. If I remember correctly the version of 1PW7 that was on the Mac App Store was only subscription. If you bought it off of their website AND you clicked a small link in one of the UI windows you could be taken to a place where you could buy a lifetime (for version 7) access key. That's the version I had.

I started shopping around since they took away that option with 1PW8 and ended up switching. There's a monster thread about this topic:

No matter what you decide I would export all of your data to a secure and/or encrypted location so that you have a backup of your data that you could also potentially import into another solution.

I wish AgileBits would make the exact figure from the German page more transparent. There's $2.99, but what amount in Euro exactly? There would also be 19% DE tax on top. I see your point about the annual fee but it will also add up over many years, being entirely dependant to resubscribe to maintain access. Hence I'm trying to figure out what the best solution for my needs are as there's only two devices I need to keep synched.

I really should have bought 1Password7 when it was still available from the Dev and to an extent the App Store makes it unclear if it was a Sub (I knew that version 8 definitely was). In hindsight, the "Get" without a purchase price should have been a clue but I incorrectly assumed it was a 14 day trial with option to purchase afterwards.

So Ive narrowed things down for maintaining my two devices.

Strongbox: Lifetime Pro version at Euro 95. User defined storage locally or cloud based. Unfortunately only Safari based.

1Password Subscription: Assuming Euro 60/year. Convenience but locked into unclear price adjustment on a yearly basis. Only online storage but various browsers supported with extensions.

OS X Passwords: Free. Only Safari support. The imported .cvs has worked fine for my web based logins. I would have to store other user name/ passwords, license keys, etc in a password protected Notes folder. Obviously not a single access solution.

I know that Ventura offers some customisation of password generation, but is it also possible to define amount of characters? I assume that Strongbox can, and 1Password8 continues to have that function.

I've got 1Password7 (7.9.9) running here on Monterey on a M1 MacBook, no subscription.

I think I downloaded it directly from the website (thus not through the App Store), probably at https://1password.com/downloads/mac/ (scroll to the bottom right for 'Using an older computer')
Ive tried DL it but I believe they've pulled the stand alone version from their site and it now defaults to what's available from the App Store. Basically I get the same invitation to Sub also.

I wonder what happens after this 2 week trial? This somehow doesn't look like a payed stand alone model is even offered, judging by this pay wall I'm hitting with any version 7.

I just checked the 1Password website and was able to download v8 (the current version) directly from the website. I was also able to scroll down to the bottom of the page and download v7 directly from the website, so the standalone version is still available on the website.

Thanks for checking. I did DL version 7 from their site but am getting that subscription paywall as per screenshot. Perhaps I've shot myself in the foot by DL the App Store (subscription) version first and it now verifies that I've already got an install?

You cannot run 1P7 because you did not upgrade when it was still possible. Now it's too late for that. I don't think that 1P6 was made to be a universal Intel/Apple Silicon app, but 1P7 is. So my guess it what you will be able to use 1P6 until Apple decides to remove Rosetta 2 from Mac computers running on Apple Silicon.

Out of curiosity, what made you rule out solutions like Enpass and Codebook?

You mentioned that you have just two devices to keep synced. I know that one is your Mac, but what is the other?

Is there a possible danger in using the out of dated 6.8.9 for Mac from the link provided above and an older version installed on my PC few years ago?

To be honost, I didn't read the entire giant thread that @MisterSavage linked me to, nor did I properly compare the others offerings you mention. I did like the Strongbox UI, some positive comments to it, perpetual and universal license for both macOS and iOS. The other device I use is an iPhone.

I've been running 1P6 since 2013 on this old MBP. In recent years however I've numerously lost connection to Mini and the extension wouldn't work on Safari. I used FF but had to copy/paste manually. This really was partially a limitation of my unstable patched OS but also a support issue.

Mucking around trying to move to 1P7, I've now been locked into read-only mode. It's ok as I'm assessing which direction to take with the M2 anyways. Exported the .cvs file and imported web logins into Ventura Password manager.

It's ok, it's a monster thread. Just linked it as an FYI if you really wanted to go into the weeds with researching.

So security-wise, older versions do not mean they are less secure than the current one?

I don't think it is, only guessing that Watchtower scans the same database on either versioning. I just didn't have proper functionality with FF, none at all with heavily outdated Safari with such old hardware. I do find Ventura Password Manager to look promising, not as a 1:1 dedicated replacement but so far so good.

No, did appreciate the link. I read newer posts from start of this year onwards and how ended putting Strongbox on the shortlist. What did you end up settling with after 1P7>1P8 ?

Good point but I really wouldn't want to run such old software, it's also become unreliable losing the Mini connection of 1P6 too often. This effectively made it useless.

I ended up going with Bitwarden. I could have gotten by with the free plan but I decided to do the $10 a year to support them and get extra features. That was over a year ago and no regrets.

I've purchased the Strongbox Pro stand alone license for OS X and iOS. The UI isn't quite as intuitive as 1Password, appears quite feature packed but imports of grouped headings appear to all be there. I've thus far removed all 1P7 remnants from the new mac and iPhone but will retain it on the old mac (the intrusive 1P7 splash screen is quite grating) until I can navigate all aspects of Strongbox and ensure everything logs in on all sites.

So far so good.
