You're coming into the problem a lot of us have had for the past 16 months. The issue that we have is that 1Password not only went subscription only and taken down and removed all servers provisioning standalone licenses, but we also have the transition from Intel to Apple Silicon.

I am/was a 1Password 6 user. I have it on my mid-2011 13" MBA. It is definitely an Intel-only client, so device Apple Silicon will require Rosetta 2 to get 1Password 6.x to work. That will currently work, but the days are numbered for that, as when Apple drops Rosetta 2 support from MacOS, all Intel binaries will not work on a Silicon Mac. So most people are cutting their losses and migrating off of 1Password, as AgileBits currently sees no reason to offer standalone versions again (even despite the various SaaS breaches that have happened over the past few years (LastPass, Dashlane, etc.).

Furthermore, 1Password 7 is still available on their site. It is there for everyone to use. You can upgrade to that version (the upgrade path is easy); However, even with that, you still have to purchase a subscription, even though it can run standalone. Again, because they took down the servers provisioning standalone licenses, you're stuck with purchasing a subscription. If you don't purchase a subscription, that upgrade process leaves your vault in read-only mode, so no further additions could be added to it. Making it worse, reverting back to 1Password 6 afterwards still leaves your vault in read-only mode.

My only way to get back to a fully functional 1Password 6 was to blow away my Mac and do a full reinstall of the OS and restore everything on my Mac via Time Machine.

There is a good 70 page thread on everyone migrating off of 1Password, including any other options people have tried or recommend. Have a look at that, as there is some good information there:

Thanks @bradl

yes indeed I've read the most recent pages of that link. It also happened to me that 1P6, updating to 1P7 then ran into REM. Certainly my bought iOS 1P7 works fine without a sub. I mistakenly believed this to be the last stand alone version, I guess it was in the past before AgileBits pulled it from their site. I wasn't really interested in installing 1P6 onto my new mac for numerous reasons.

Well, so far the universal Strongbox Pro stand alone is working well for me. Just have to get used to the new UI. Certainly not as intuitive as 1Password (exceedingly polished) but once properly in the background it will be perfect.

Followed your exploits as I'm in the same boat (or will be soon enough). Been using 1P for years too. Stuck on v6 on Mojave now but at some point everything will stop working and I'll be forced to but a new mac, use a new OS and buy all new apps. Still, for 10-15 years using this lot has been a good run so I guess I cant complain. Progress never stops right.

Anyway I got my eye on Strongbox now as that seems pretty good when it comes time

You know what is? I hate being so reliant on subs, especially with such important access data. It’s nice (for only 2 devices) to control who (me) and where stuff is stored. Family plans, many devices, I get the advantage .

Now also updating raw editors/ dam software, am paying so much more for stand alone licenses too but whilst the option exists, I’ll be choosing it.

Yep, I despise subs in principal. For things like malware or virus protection etc it makes sense, those things are constantly being updated. Adobe and everyone else whos copied them are just mercinary scum trying to squeeze money out of their customers for nothing.
