Hi guys, thanks for checking out our new iPhone app! I just saw this MacRumors post and thought I'd chime in.

Most of the issues you've mentioned here are already fixed and an update has been submitted to Apple (as a few mentioned above). We're really hoping that updates don't take anywhere near as long for Apple to process as the original 1.0 version did (over 2 weeks).

Regarding our built in browser vs. Mobile Safari. The problem is that sure, we could have the links send you to Mobile Safari and open the related web page, but there is no way for 1Password to fill anything in (your username or password) in Safari on the iPhone. We have a ton of improvements planned for our built in browser that will, in my opinion, make you not miss Mobile Safari at all while using 1Password. I'm not saying that we're trying to completely replace Safari for all of your web browsing needs but it will definitely end up being a giant step forward.

Version 1.0 is really just the first *small* step for us (not so small in development time though). Pretty much every aspect of the app has huge improvements planned (and already being worked on). I'm so friggin' excited to see everything in my head be put into this sucker!

Well I have been circling 1password for a few years now wondering if I really needed it. If this works as well as it should with my iPhone then I think its time ti buy.

I'm really looking forward to trying this application out when I get an iPhone. I have a hotmail account that would be a pain to check having to login. Inputting a 4-digit pin will be so much nicer. And there are some other sites like online banking that would greatly benefit, in my opinion.

Not blown away

I was referring to the fact that many have already pointed out.

The fact is, yes auto-fill works, but 1Password for iPhone uses it's own version of WebKit,
instead of throwing the user into Mobile Safari, through a native API, of which the SDK is capable of. ;)

That's what I don't like about this. I can't use Safari and have to go to a totally different app just to log in. Honestly, I like the previous way of using bookmarks because I could use Safari. The app does crash a lot for me. Syncing over WiFi rocked. When you enter your unlock and master codes; if your first entry is incorrect there's no way to go back to correct it without relaunching the app.

Great app! I have been using the desktop application for some time now, and it really is a must have program! I am looking forward to updates, if it's better than safari, all the better!

Glad to see that the lead designer is here paying attention to user input!

Apples App update system confuses the hell of of me. Today, it said an update was ready for 1Password, but it was only 1.0, the version I have installed. Other apps I KNOW have updates, don't show up... Ugh

thanks to Dan for stopping by to read up on our experiences. I just want to say that I was very excited for this app but let down by the initial product. I'm hoping the next version delivers.

Good luck with the subsequent releases Agile folks, we'll be here checking them out :)

Thanks again for the support guys. :) I'm an avid MacRumors reader (although I don't post much) so it's nice being able to help out some of my fellow ummm ... MacRumorians. :p

I just talked to Roustem (our lead developer on the iPhone app) and he said the ability to delete items has been added to our internal build and will be included in 1.2.1. Unfortunately we can't submit 1.2.1 until 1.2 has been reviewed and accepted by Apple.

If you'd like you guys can check out the changelog for 1.2 (the version currently waiting for Apple's review) here. I think this was already linked to by someone else but I'll post it again. Here is our FAQ on 1.0. Hope that helps!

I don't see the "Wallet" button on the bottom. Did this feature make it into the iPhone app?

Sync with the desktop version...

I have found that if you sync it with the desktop verision and you have wallet items on the desktop the next time you open the app on you iPhone, the wallet will show up at the bottom.

I don't see the "Wallet" button on the bottom. Did this feature make it into the iPhone app?

Noticed another problem: If I add more than two fields to one of my "Login" entries, if I save -> quit -> and reload the app it only shows the two default fields (username and password). The additional fields I've added have disappeared.

I really don't get the real use of the iPhone version. I have been using the desktop version from the very beginning and love it dearly. I even liked the way it worked on the iPhone with bookmarks and syncing. Pretty simple and it worked just like the desktop version. But with this version it seems like a lot of hoopla and run arounds for something that worked better the old way. For example, in the old way, I just simply went to a particular site, clicked on the 1Password bookmark, entered in my Master password and bingo, there you are.

Now, I have to load 1Password, enter in a general 4 digit password. Then I have to look among the hundreds of sites listed in the app just to find what I am looking for. And it can take a while. To make matters worse, some sites are not listed like their non-login pages, so it makes it even harder to find what I am looking for. Then, once I find it, I have to enter my master password. OK. Now I am in my site I wanted to go. Now what? Well, once I am in there, I can't even use my keyboard. Hell, I'm not even in Safari. What the hell? So I can get into a site, but I just can't use it if it requires any typing? Not good.

And what if I am browsing through a web site where I go from link to link THEN get to my log in page? What do I have to do now? Well, I have to leave Safari, go to 1Password . . . well you know the rest. This iPhone app just seems to be all dressing and no substance. I feel like I am in Pandora's box, only to find a useless app after all the bells, whistles, hoops and hurdles.

If you want to use it for other things like Wallet items and secure notes, that's fine, but as far as a repository for all you web log ins and passwords for web sites, the old way was soooooo much better.

Don't get me wrong. I love these guys and what they are doing. There is no one out there doing what they do for the price they are charging. But this iPhone app seems more like an app just to be an app when the old way was simpler and a LOT more intuitive.

The developers stripped features from the 1.0 release to get it into the app store. The new 1.2 version that was submitted yesterday should be a welcome improvement over many of the initial bugs.

One thing I don't understand about people immediately dismissing the iphone app who have been using the desktop app is simply the fact of the upgrade cycle of the desktop app; it is extremely fast. The developers have been constantly improving the desktop app and taking in user feedback to be the best out there, so why are there doubts that the iphone app will NOT get improved?

I have to agree with everything you're saying. These guys make the most amazing desktop app but I just feel that this iPhone app is convoluted.

The bookmark syncing is so much more useful in it's current implementation, and the wireless syncing with mobileme is amazing.

I hope that we still get the option to use bookmark syncing in the future.

Dan,

I can't begin to tell you how many people I've told about 1Password. I believe it is the best non-Apple app for Mac. Hell, probably better than several Apple programs. It's the one program I would not want to live without.

I must echo the voices of others that have posted above me. Many of us, myself included, love the old bookmark way. Continue your mobile version, but please, please, please do not take away the old way. I've been sold on it for months.

I was one of the lucky 100 BETA testers, and I have to say that 1.2 fixes 99% of the problems brought up in this thread. Come on people, wait for it. It's not 1PW's fault. It's Apple's for taking so long to put updates into the App Store. (1.1.1 was out WELL before 1.0 came out on the App Store, and a lot of bugs had been fixed. They've been keeping up very well, actually. You guys just haven't seen it yet. ;) )

I agree 100%. I have also been using it on my mac for ages and I love it -- and I also don't get this new app at all. It is just rather silly for all the reasons mentioned by TitoC.

Thank you for the kind words! The bookmark was the only solution we could provide without the SDK. Unfortunately, there are a few problems with the bookmark. First of all, it is a dead-end, it is not possible to improve it any further and you cannot edit the data. Second, you are forced to type the master password every time since there is no way to carry it from one page to another. Third, there is a potential security problem recently discovered by US Navy experts — since the whole bookmarklet application is a piece of JavaScript, it is running in an unsecure environment and it can be compromised. It is highly improbable but not impossible.

The idea behind 4-digit code and the master password was that at least half of your websites (twitter, digg, macrumors?) do not require a high-level of encryption. The native application makes sure that the unlock code cannot be picked on the iPhone (version 1.2 will lock you out after several unsuccessful attempts). However, for banking and other important sites you need to be sure that the data is protected even if someone copied the database off the iPhone and tried to run a bruce-force attack. In this case, master password is much more secure.

The missing keyboard is an unfortunate bug that I introduced while trying to get the landscape mode working in the web browser. It is fixed in version 1.2.

If you want to use it for other things like Wallet items and secure notes, that's fine, but as far as a repository for all you web log ins and passwords for web sites, the old way was soooooo much better.

Thanks again for the feedback! We didn't want to charge for the iPhone application because we wanted to see as many users as possible and having a successful desktop application let us do that. In some sense, it has backfired as we got over 50,000 users in just a couple of days and it was a challenge to handle all the requests and troubleshoot all the problems (especially when we have to wait for the updated version to appear in the store).

It will probably take us a couple more versions to get the things right and solve the most common issues but it should only get better from now on.

Uh oh...

Looks like the Javascript version is gone, as of the latest update. This makes me sad.

:(

I just started tinkering with the new version, and there are a few things I just don't get yet. Maybe someone can explain.

Is Wifi the only way to sync? There is no syncing via iTunes?

What happens when the page you log into isn't the one that's bookmarked? 1Password has always been so great at saving passwords by domain name. For example, a shopping site where there isn't a place to log in until after you've filled up your shopping cart, and are in the process of checking out?

I'm confused.

iTunes sync is not available to third-party developers. Wi-Fi is currently the only was to sync 1Password data. We plan to add MobileMe (webdav) based syncing in future.

There is a "keyhole" button on the toolbar. It is similar to "Restore Form" menu on the desktop.

A lot of people asked about the javascript bookmarklet and it is possible that we will bring it back (for example, for less important logins that do not require high level of protection).

Also, version 2.7 is still available, if you need the bookmarks at this very moment:

In response to those who "don't get" the point of a more fully functional iPhone application -

While it might not be as easy as the Bookmark method, which I admit I haven't used, I really value a complete password storage application on the iPhone. As a former Treo user, I've been used to SplashID for storing my personal data, and used it quite a bit. My usage was blended between wallet-type items and web forms. When I'm traveling (several times a month) it's great to be able to pull out the phone and give whatever I needed to look up in a hurry (as well as enter new items on the fly).
