My favorite reasonably priced speakers are made by Audioengine ( www.audioengineusa.com ).

However, if they'll be using a new iMac, are you sure that you want to get some speakers to go with them? The built-in speakers aren't terrible, and it'd be hard to significantly outdo them and stay under your $100 budget.

 A pair of cheap $10 speakers would significantly outdo the built-in iMac speakers.

"significantly outdo" is well... not very clear. The difference between $10 and $100 is rather significant. I disagree with that notion though, that's giving the built-in's too much credit and the external's not enough.

I don't know, the built-in speakers on the newly redesigned iMacs aren't half-bad.

Visit a quiet computer retailer and listen to them, or Google [ review imac "21.5" speakers ]. MacWorld briefly mentions the redesigned speakers in their review: http://www.macworld.com/article/143575/2009/11/imacs_oct2009.html .

I own a 27" i5 and the built in speakers sound only marginally better than those in a MacBook (not good). Luckily I have some Yamaha HS80M studio monitors to listen to my music on.
