Well, yes and no. If money's not a problem, splurge! You can never upgrade a laptop, errr, very easily and most times it's not worth it.

If money is a problem, well, then no. A 2.0GHz DUAL CORE machine is FINE! ;)

It's basically if money is the problem or not.

I can think of better, more worthwhile things to spend that extra $300 on for your Mac instead. Are you really, really going to need that extra 160 MHz? And if you are, is it really worth $300 to you? I think the answer is no, but you tell me.

I wonder if we'll see the 2.16GHZ become the standard in the $2500 machine, before they move the MacBook Pro away from Yonah?

Possibly. Merom isn't due until Q1 07 now, so who knows....

I am curious about whether the vram difference between the macbookpro models is important. I don't game. The most processor intensive stuff I would use is Logic, Live and other music aps for fun. I expect to use a second monitor for my work, which mostly involves using Word, Safari and some other low CPU dictionary aps.

Any thoughts?

For your uses a MBP is not needed. You might just want to wait for the MacBook => iBook replacement.

This may surprise you all

it's not just a 160mhz increase, these are dual core, technically it's 320mhz, so its in all fairness a $1 a mhz, now ask yourself, is that worth it? I want the best computer ever, so I'm going to get it, is it necessary, probably not, if you were questioning getting applecare then for gods sake put it on your first generation macbook pro instead of the mhz increase, you never no what these first gens are capable of.

Yes, it's technically 320 MHz, but it's still a minor increment for over 10% the cost. Spend it on something else for your Mac, like RAM, but not on such a marginal CPU bump. Just my thoughts.

I think if the new iBook is also dual core and supports 2nd monitor use (not just mirroring), I might just do that. I'm looking forward to seeing the specs.

Thanks for the tip!
