There's no electronics in any of these adapters as well. Just a circuit board
Are you saying a circuit board is not electronics?

Read the original post again, maybe you didn't get it. It's exactly this what's causing the OP's problem with an Icy Dock. IMO any solution that connects directly to the SATA port is preferable.

I also had trouble with an adpater like the one from ICY DOCK. and that is exactly why I prefer the adpaters from Apple, the SSD plugs into the SATA connector on the backplane, no interconnector-board in between.

No, I would not call an simple circuit board with no ICs, capacitors, diodes or resistors electronics, just as I would not call a power cable electronics.

That said, I personally have used almost any of the suggested solutions here (that includes the original Apple SSD adapter, OWC, NewerTech or IcyDock) without any problems. My father still uses the IcyDock in his Early 2008 iMac since years now without a hitch.

A direct solution is preferable, but according to my experiences more on a theoretical 'simpler is more elegant' reasoning.

I use these 2.5 to 3.5 Inch adapters only for power, not for SATA :D They are indeed very suitable for powering SSD's: https://forums.macrumors.com/threads/motherboard-to-pcie-sata-power.1712884/#post-18855446
Very nice idea, and a clean solution congrats.

A bit offtopic but for the record I also have a Velocity Solo x2 with two SSDs connected, containing all my boot volumes. The power for the 2nd one is taken directly from the port of bay 4, I've just put two Lindy cables together. Granted it looks not as clean when open but works for me, and again: no additional electronics. ;)

I have 3 SSDs in my 2010 Mac Pro. They are in bays 2-4. I found 80GB WD Velociraptors on eBay for $8.00 each so l purchased 3 of them. I removed the 80 GB HDDs and mounted my SSDs using the WD mount and installed them on the stock Apple HDD sleds. They work perfectly and are definitely the cheapest solution you can find.

Well, I liked this post, once I understood what the heck he was saying, so much, that I just did the same darn thing +. I'll be removing two 7 year old Seagate 500GB spinners and replacing them with two of my Samsung SSDs currently on a Duo x2. I'll be keeping my other Duo x2 with 2 more Samsung SSDs for backup duty. I'll be replacing the removed Duo with a Lycom DT-120 and a Samsung SM951 512GB blade. I'll have one less internal storage device, but the blade should be awesome as my boot drive.

When this is all done, I guess I'll have an Apricorn Duo x2 to sell.

Fangio, aren't you getting a bit inconsistent now? First, you originally advocate a direct solution and now you present one with (i) two connectors (SATA for SSD and PCIe for mainboard) which (ii) in addition uses a cable as well? Second, here is the backside of my own Velocity Solo x2 - looks pretty 'electronic' to me ;-)

Actually this thread is about NO ADAPTERS between SSD and standard SATA ports. The mention of powering SSDs in a SATA III solution is a different case, and as I said, somewhat offtopic and just for the record.

Looking to start a fight @mbosse? Not interested. Quit trying to split hairs and let it go at that.
