I realize that the i5 doesn't have HT and the i7 does, but I thought that at best HT alone would yield a ~20% improvement. His significantly higher clock speed should more than make up for that difference, no?

I guess we'll know for sure once some i7-2600 benches get posted...

One just did, got 12,000. But not sure if it was 32 or 64-bit version.

Well threaded apps will run at double speed with hyperthreading, eg. Handbrake. So, no, in some cases, the extra clock speed does not counter the lack of HT.

Yep. It really is amazing how much of a different hyperthreading makes. But admittedly, there are very few apps that can take advantage of that many threads. This is one of those instance where perhaps a synthetic benchmark really isn't a good way to compare real-world performance.

Not a good way at ALL. Seriously, this is ridiculous. In real world use for all but a very few users, the new iMacs will all smoke the mbp. wait for the real world benchmarks from macworld and the like. Geekbench is only meaningful for, well, geeks. :)

Have you been able to update sl?

Nope, I tried the Combo and the Single updates. Both say it doesn't meet the requirements. And nothing in software update still. I think it's because of the different Display and Keyboard preference panes that haven't been put into 10.6.7 yet, and will probably release a Early 2011 iMac specific 10.6.7 update soon.

Can you please give the build number off your machine?

I also just found a group of roughly 3 dead/stuck pixels in the screen.. I think all the more reason to package it up and exchange it for the i7 27-inch model tomorrow.

Yeah, the GPU is the big one for sure, I'm just sure if it's worth $800. :) A 1GB should have been standard in the base 27" IMO. Had that been the case, that's almost certainly what I'd be getting.

The extra Thunderbolt port is nice too, but with the daisy chaining capabilities I'm not sure it's as big of a deal either.

But I get your point, sometimes it's about the bigger picture. :)

Or an option at the least. I am probably getting the 2.7 i5 27" base, but would have liked to either get the 6970 or have it as an option.
