I would think that especially for fitness purposes, the watch will not require a phone to do things. You should still be able to access all the stock fitness apps to see that data. Imagine you are running and you can't get an armband for your iPhone 6 Plus because it won't fit on your arms, but you really want to listen to music. So you use bluetooth headphones with your  Watch. You don't need to take your iPhone with you because it can still play music stored on it, it can still track fitness. It just can't do the things required through iPhone relay. You won't get notifications from apps like messages or phone or third party apps. (unless perhaps you are running on a treadmill and your phone is close enough for bluetooth to connect to the watch).

It does need an iPhone to work completely, but it will work without it. It will always work as a watch.

Yes that's getting a great deal of hype and success lately. It looks quite decent, but I'm not a fan of the design personally..
Yeah, I was at Best Buy last weekend and peeked at the watch section. The Moto 360 just drives me nuts: it's thick, it's large, but it has no heft to it. Which isn't a good thing when you're going for a "premium" design. It felt cheap. Plus the way the band attaches to it only accentuates how thick it is. Of the smart watches Best Buy had on display, it was the least appealing from a design perspective to me.

(Then I went online and ordered a Martian Notifier online for $50 off. The fact that it's still an analog watch sold me on it, and design-wise it's not terrible. The way I look at it, for the price, I got a decent analog watch that also has some minor smart functions with good battery life. So far, so good. I figure that, if/when I get an Apple Watch, I'll still wear the Notifier in situations where the Apple Watch would be too big a distraction or wouldn't be appropriate.)
