In light of the fact that the 20" iMac has been reduced to a single configuration on the Apple website and a lower priced 24" has been added. Does anyone else think that the 20" is on the way out?

It may be. The 17" sat in that kind of limbo for a revision or two before it was retired as well.
Yep. I don't forsee an update to the 20" Cinema Display, either, and haven't since the launch of the 24".
They still sell that, though, so the 20" might be relegated to the place of the 17" when they kill it.

That might also mean that once the 20" goes, perhaps a 30" or 28" iMac will take the place of the new high-end, while 24" becomes the standard.
One can dream at least. I just wish there was a way to get the 30's resolution from a decently specced machine without spending a fortune on a pro.

That's news to me. There aren't even 17" machines in the refurb store any more.

I doubt that. I know this seems hard to believe but not everyone wants a 24' screen. I for one can't use one, nor do I want one. A 20' screen is still big.
It is not like Apple is going to be moving up and up in screen size. your not going to get a 40' screen five years down the road.

I know I for one couldn't even fit a 20' screen in my house, let alone a 24' screen. And a 40'?? Can you imagine how much that would cost???!!
Now, a 24" screen on the other hand fits on my desktop fine. And my kids really like their 20" screen....

There are alot of people who don't want that big of a screen. My face is literally two feet from the screen and the bottom of my 20 imac is even with my chin. I have to look up at a 20 screen because of my desk has a shelf to set a monitor on it is a two tier desk.
I could get rid of the desk, but since the desk cost about 5000.00 that is really not a option. Apple knows not everyone wants a 24 screen and hence the 20 is still alive.
That was sarcasm - you used the abbreviation for FOOT ('), where the screen is measured in INCHES ("). So you were saying that not everyone wants a 24 FOOT screen, and that a 20 FOOT screen is even too big...

The REAL question is if that happens, will Apple then put cheaper displays in the 24" and not tell anybody like they did with the 20" aluminum?

Seems like the 20" iMac is on it's way out. Usually when devices go down to single-configurations, Apple's just trying to get these things out of the warehouse.
And I have a feeling Apple will take the 20" out, drop the price a bit on the 24", and add an option for perhaps a 30" (talking Cinema Displays here). At the moment, though, there aren't any other LED-backlit desktop displays on the market, so really Apple has the option to set any price they want.

There's no reason for Apple to have a 30" iMac. They don't *need* to have two sizes of iMacs, in fact, it would make better financial sense for them to have just one size due to the drop in development costs. Remember, the original iMac only came in one size and did so for many years. 24" is enough for any consumer, at least as far as Apple is concerned.
I agree that it makes sense to only have one size from a component cost perspective.
It is always nice, however to have a "low priced" entry product and for some, the 24" model is just too big... Who knows and "greater" minds than ours will determine the fate of the 20" model.
24" isn't 'too big'. That's what people said when the choice was between 15" and 17". Then when 20" came out it was "too big" for some.
Don't believe me? Here people were discussing whether the 20" iMac was too big with the odd person saying it was a "bit *too* big".
As the cost of 24" screens comes down, Apple can put them into lower and lower price bracketed iMacs. When a time comes so that they can put a 24" screen into an iMac that will fit the bottom end iMac pricing and still give them the same profit as the 20" iMac does now then they will most certainly do it.

For the right price, I would seriously consider purchasing one of these for my home. I can't see them in the education store in the UK. Is this just a US thing or am I not looking properly?
We may see 20"-24"-24"-28" similar to what 17"-20"-20"-24" was in 2006. Hopefully the 28" will deliver the 65 W desktop CPUs and better GPUs, which would make up for the resolution staying at 1920x1200.
Or, Apple might consolidate the iMacs into one line at 24". This possibility seems to be more likely now.

24" is too large.
I have the 20", but with the Radeon 2600. If they don't bring back the high end 20", I'll have to buy a 24" next time, which I don't want to have to do.

Can you buy these from the education store without proving you are a teacher or student? They shouldn't really count if only schools can get them.
At work I use an Eizo 17 inch screen, which is big enough for all the tasks at hand.
At home I work with a 20 inch iMac, which actually turns out to be too big for most things, especilally with Spaces used, about one 3rd of the screen isn't actively used...Coversutra helps to fill the right side of the screen with an album cover...
So I would be disappointed if the 20 inch size disappears.
