TN on the 20''?! Boo!
Has it been confirmed what type of panel the 24'' iMac is using?
*prays for S-PVA or something similar*

I wasn't really disappointed, but I am used to a 23" ACD at work and kinda missed the extra pixels at home. My brother, on the other hand, upgraded from an old 15" VAIO laptop (1024x768), so the 20" is gigantic to him. I guess you could say it worked out well for both of us.

Thanks Alloye. Sounds like the perfect solution for you and your brother. I think I will order the 20" just as soon as I clean and rearrange my home office. Now I'm excited!

Piece of advice. With some of the shipping delays, if I were you I'd order it and then clean that office!

what do you think?

I'm a recent mac convert typing this from on my macbook giddily. In the next 2 weeks i believe i will be getting the 20 or 24 as discussed here but I have checked out and played with both models at 2 separate apple stores and my current conclusion is:

The 24" looks grainy and pixelated but has a better viewing angle distances
The 20" looks amazing but of course isn't as grandiose with also a limited viewing angle

Did anyone else have these same findings? I feel as though everyone had the opposite response...I did not adjust or play with color profiles or anything, so maybe I am missing something....

thanks.

My 24" doesn't look grainy or pixelated at all. Not sure what you're seeing...

anyone noticed on the 24inch screen the far left side of the screen being brighter than the rest.

Drag a white window from the left side of the screen to the right.

Thanks

apparently the 24' use a "AS-IPS – Advanced Super IPS" TFT lcd screen. it has advanced colour contrast ratio and what not.

I don't think this is true for the 24". AS-IPS panels are extremly expensive and only used for professional monitors (more professional than Apples ACD displays, which use S-IPS).

I believe the new 24" iMac uses a S-PVA panel (same as the Dell 2407WFP) which is cheaper, but still a considerable step above TN Film.

The 24" has a slightly lower pixel density than the 20" (94 vs. 99 DPI), but in no way do I find it grainy or pixelated.

Mine does not have this problem. Color temperature and brightness are very even across the entire display with only a slight amount of dimming in the far corners.

First look at the real thing - 20"

I wanted to see the new imac first hand so I walked into a local Apple store and saw the 20" imac running next to a 30" cinema display connected to a 15" macbook pro. The 20" imac looked totally washed out in comparison and so I started messing around with the display settings. Turns out that I was standing up looking down at the screen ... and if you look at the screen off axis from the top it's way bright... the more acute the angle the worse it gets and if you look at the display from off axis below it's way dark.... so any angle off of direct 90 degree negatively affects the screen contrast/brightness. While this may be fine for consistent sit-down desktop use, as a replacement for the kitchen Imac G4 LCD and the screen saver of family photos my wife uses from iphoto, I wonder if I'll would regret buying it. The 24" screen is just too big for the same area of the kitchen. I was somewhat surprised and disappointed with this display.... Didn't mind the glossy finish and the keyboard is cool... hopefully Apple knows and can address this display issue quickly.

i'm in the market for either a 20 or 24 just as everybody else seems to be. and just like everybody else i have the fun decision of 20 or 24 inches...i use my dated g4 powerbook for photo editing, movie editing and a few other media things. Mostly in final cut studio and photoshop.

if it were for a desk in an office i'd just go with a 20 but this is going in my bedroom across the room from my bed and i plan to use it as a dvd player and later a tv. At first i was like 24 all the way but now i'm not positive if thats what i should do.

I'm in the same predicament. I can't decide if I want the 20" or the 24". I'm going to be using mine for photos, web, email, and some windows game. The thing that makes me wonder about the 24" is the size. I'm going to be pretty close to the screen at my desk and I already have a 20" that is just right. I just wonder if the 24" would be to big to sit close to. Any suggestions?

I had a 20" for about a year, and it seemed really small by the time I got rid of it. I went with the 24" because I know I'll probably wish I got it later. :p

Most of it seems to be about new models, but I'd like to know the technologies used in both previous and new models. Do you know what type of LCDs are used in all five of the models? Here is a start, based on information from various threads, and you can correct it where necessary:

new-24: H-IPS (probably) or S-PVA (?)
new-20: TN
old-24: recently manufactured displays use H-IPS, but were the first ones (almost a year ago) different?
old-20: ?? (they were not TN, but what were they?) -- IPS ?
old-17: TN

I asume some correction is necessary, especially about the questions -- like the old "white" 20" (since it's one of three models I'm considering) and the new-24, and whether several types of old-24s were made. Thanks, in advance, for any information you're able to provide. Craig
