The 20" 2600pro model is a value leader plus the fact that is uses like what 80 watts less? That means its a mean green machine. Lets save the planet and trade in those 24" powerhogs.:D

I recently switched my parents to Apple. Of course we went with the base 20" 2.0 iMac. They've been away for the week and I've been using it full time instead of my 2.2 MacBook. Even this base model with 1.5GB of RAM performs great with basic tasks. I would venture to say someone that is looking into an iMac is a basic user or a switcher and the base 20" or next model up is a great option. Like someone said above, you can't beat its value and its energy savings.

If green was the goal, an iPhone would serve most peoples computer needs. You can surf the web, email, watch videos, play music and with MobileMe or Google Apps you could most likely do all the spreadsheet and word processing stuff you need.

On the other hand, I like my 24" iMac's power requirements sucking the leaves off the trees :)

all the iMac's are a great machine. I had the 20" but then once i realized how nice the big display on the 24" was I had to get it why not ya know. Besides I had the extra money for it. The 20" is great I just wanted more screen and a little better color. Congrats on Your 20" im glad your enjoying it. dont rush the 24" Your only missing 4" of screen if you dont need it. your not missin onut ;)

Only 4"?!? Gotta say that my wife's 22" HP flat panel looks a little small next to the 24" iMac. And that's only 2":)

I must say I have enjoyed the posts in this thread. Lots of good responses and not too hostile.

I guess at the end of the day we are all in the same boat. Just enjoying the hell out of our Macs no matter what the screen size. ;)

People push what they have (generally). They like it, so others will like it too.

That's why I push the refurbished white 20" iMac :)

I didn't like the screen quality of the aluminum 20" and couldn't afford a 24" (white or aluminum). I'm very happy with it so I think other people will be happy with it too (unless they post reasons why they don't want white or 20" or iMac or whatever).

Regards - Greg

I want an iMac for general use, no gaming. I would like a big screen for genealogy charts and for showing photos. What is the better option - a 20" with 4 gig and a bigger hard drive, or a base model 24" for about the same price?
I value any responses.

I'm not sure. Even thought the 20" is "technically inferior" I compaired the two side by side at the mac store and didn't see that much of a difference. Granted i'm not an artitst or anything, so I guess my layman's opinion doesn't count. (My brother is an artist and uses that in similar arguments all the time).

Anywho, my opinion is if you like it, then it doesn't matter; I love my 20" iMac.

I didn't see a difference in the store either. I bought the 24 because I wanted the bigger display. Even now when I see a 20 in the store it continues to look very impressive. So there's no snobbery from this 24 owner!

For me it was the video card. Thats why I wanted a 3.06mhz 24". Apple's been using the 256 2600 card for a while haven't they? I wonder how much use the 2600 card will be to me a few years from now? Bye the way I haven't purchased yet but probably will in the fall.

The 2600 has been available in an iMac since mid 2007.

I'm getting the 24" 3.06 one. That's a big step, I use 1GHz Athlon with 256MB SDRAM PC now, so do I really need machine like this one? I could work on low 20" one, but I can get 3.06 after 2 months of work(front-end dev) ( I'm 17, and don't get any money from parents ) so I want it. I'm going to love it and I hope it will serve me for a long time. My friends started to ask me why I'm going to get it (Mac are exclusive in Poland) when I can get cheaper and 'better' PC in half a price and yeah, they think I'm snobbish.

You've answered to yourself, you need computer for general use so you don't need 4GB RAM, even if, RAM is cheap now, you don't have to buy Apple certificated one. If 24" is important attribute for you — Take it. :)

How much of a difference would the 2.66ghz make over the 2.4?

I don't do any video editing or play any games. Is the 2.66 worth the extra $300?

omg such noobs

lol if 24" imac users are better than 20" imac users than does that mean that mac pro users are better than the 24" imac users???????????????????

Well, I will say that after ordering my 20" iMac about a week ago, I told someone about it, and he goes "Oh, just the 20, hope you like having a ****** display. The 24 is so much better" I think simply because the 24" iMac owners paid more, they feel as if they're "better" than users of other "lowly" Mas, such as the 20" iMac and Mac Mini. I very nearly bought a Mac Mini before I purchased my 20" iMac. I see no reason not to buy a Mac Mini, except for my use, I wanted the dedicated graphics. But, the Mac Mini is a superb little computer, and though I personally think it's a little bit overpriced for what it is, it does not stop me from saying that it is still a wonderful computer. My brother has a 1.42Ghz G4 Mini, and I like to tease him occasionally with "My Mac is better than yours" BUT I'm never serious about it, and he knows that it's all in good fun. A G4 Mini is still actually a viable computer, and in graphics intensive applications it can actually be better than an Intel Mini. I will agree that owners of high end Macs tend to look down on the owners of cheaper Macs.

I owned a Mirror Door G4 for two years and sold it just recently, and actually honestly got laughed at a few times because I didn't have an Intel processor. That is not to say that G4 Mirror Door is not a wonderful machine. It is. I just needed something that was capable of running Windows for school. Otherwise, the G4 Mirror Door is still a very nice and capable machine. The snobbery doesn't bother me, I just look at it as being the "way that it is" I'm not going to be able to change it no matter what. And, I also agree that on an internet forum, the OP often asks for an opinion on which is better. If he's not short on space, then of course you'd say that the 24" is better, it would be foolish not to. So, it all depends on what the OP wants to use the computer for. As a basic computer for performing tasks such as watching movies, playing music, internet, email etc. the 20" iMac is fine. if you have a small desk like I do, the 24" may not be a good idea as, though only a small bit larger, I know that small bit larger prevented me from buying one because it would not fit on my desk very well. This is the reason that Apple makes different models of computers, so there is a computer for every budget and use.

Of all the reasons people give for buying a 20" instead of a 24", price is certainly one of the most valid and hard to argue against. I can see that. What I don't understand, however, is the issue of desk space.

Best I can tell, the stand underneath the 24" iMac isn't significantly larger than the stand on a 20", so I find it hard to believe that desk space comes into play - are we then talking about what's above a person's desk being in the way of a 24" iMac? And if you get out a tape measure, is a 24" screen really that much larger?

Yes, the 24" iMac is that much larger. The picture below shows why desk space would be an issue. A 24" iMac would not fit in this space (I measured it) even if you removed the router on the right side.

Oh, and buying a new desk is not always an option.

I've recently purchased both a 20" and a 24" Aluminum cased iMac's within the last 2 months. One for my mother-in-law who needed a new computer and one for home since the kids try to take over my MBP to play games. I didn't base my purchases on which screen was better, what has the better video card etc... it was based on what would fit in the areas where the computers would be used.

I actually asked my mother-in-law if she wanted the larger screen and she said it would be too much, so I ordered the 20" iMac. I was going to buy a 20" iMac for home also, but once I saw the price difference with my military/student discounts I just bought the 24" iMac instead.

No, but removing the hutch is always an option, and that's what I did.

What 20" owners see as snobbery might actually be their own inferior complexity at play. I can't stand TN panels so I'll always recommend the 24" over 20" for the Alu iMac. It has nothing to do with size.

So you REALLY wanted a 24" iMac, but couldn't afford the desk :)
