hey can you give a link to the raid firewire enclosure that you got? and how's it working for you?

thanks

Sure....

It's awesome :) Working perfectly... ;)

http://www.cooldrives.com/dusahadrfi80.html

However, I'd opt for the second fan... now.. the fans are a bit noisy... so... i'd look for either an alternative at silentpcreview.com or other site... or... just do what I did and tear out the bridgeboard and stick it in a PC CASE and hide that under your desk ;)

thanks for the link. the only thing is i don't have firewire 800, and it says it's a requirement. what do you think?

Nope. Has Firewire 800, USB 2.0, and good ol' Firewire 400.

However, I don't think you'll see much advantage with RAID 0 unless you have FW800... the others don't have the bandwidth to support the high data transfer rates...

thanks. so with firewire 400, do you think it's worth it? if not RAID 0, what about RAID 1?

Unless you have FW800, I believe this is not the right case for you (save if you plan on upgrading in the near future)...

The heat that the two hard drives output in such close quarters is mighty... and noisy fans must be used in that short a space...

So, if you can't take advantage of the FW800 for RAID0 throughput, you may as well save some money and get 2 separate firewire 400 / USB 2.0 cases, and put your drives in those...

You can always do OS X built-in software raid on the two drives daisychained, and then you won't have the heat or noise issues :)

That is my personal Opine ;)

I gotta call BS on this. Not on the user, but perhaps on WoW.

On my rig, clearly superior in every possible way, I *barely* hit 100 fps at 1680 x 1050 with the same graphical settings. This is on:

MacPro 2.0 Ghz x4
ATI X1900 512 MB
3 GB RAM

I suppose I could entirely blow away my config and try again and see what happens. It's worth mentioning I have a TON of add-ons installed as well.

Little update.... I duplicated my WoW folder and removed all add-ons, blew away the WDB and WTF folders, clearing the cache and user settings.

With everything maxed out and staring at a wall I was able to get over 200 fps (default UI). So clearly add-ons play a large part in performance.

On the WoW forums one MacPro user reported getting over 400 fps (!) on their rig.

Of course, no one plays the game standing at the inn or staring at a wall, so they're synthetic numbers anyway. ;) Bottom line is that I'm very impressed with the performance and I suspect 24" iMac owners will be too.

Grats to the OP!

Ah, I was very worried about the Add-Ons slowing the game :( I like using the Insomniax addon pack, but I'm going to make my own blend soon. What addons are you using, Abulia? And how's the FPS with addons on, while raiding or in Orgrimmar? Even though you use superior hardware, I'd like something to be able to compare to and try to give a baseball park guess at how a 24'' iMac would fare when bogged heavily.

oh ok, thanks. how exactly does daisychain work? you plug 2 drives together, and then just one to the computer, or what?

daisy chaining works like this. Say i have one firewire on my computer and 2 firewire drives. i can connect the first firewire drive to the computer, then attach the second drive to the first drive. the computer will see the two drives as if they both were plugged directly to it. your could theoreticly do this 125ish time but would become impracticle real fast becuase the 400mbs pipe is shared between each attached device.

oh ok. thanks, that clears it up for me.

Er, I'm using a custom build of add-ons. The base is Cosmos but heavily-modified. I don't know of an easy way to list them.

At my res of 1680 x 1050, everything to full, FSAA at x4 the lowest I've seen is 30fps in IF. The game has never felt anything but silky smooth, even during a 40-man raid.

If anything, I'm tempted to say that somethings borked, because it feels like I'm getting a lot better performance than what the fps counter claims. I'm not sure how that one Mac Pro owner got 400 fps; even with a "virgin install" the best I got was 200.
