nope..it worked for me. There is nothing they can do to stop us. The iPhone is the only phone i can think of that has never violated your 2 year contract. Thanks Mr. Jobs!

So what you are doing is switching to AT&T, signing a 2-year contract and getting a smartphone with rebate. Then, selling the smartphone on ebay full price, and buying iPhone? Are there any loops you might have to go through with this plan?
No. If you read the AT&T FAQ on the iPhone it basically says that you're allowed to activate an iPhone at any point during your contract, so there's no reason not to get a free phone first and then activate an iPhone. Its all a bit silly really, they should just subsidise the iPhone rather than make people have to just through hoops to get the subsidy they should be getting.

I was already on Cingular/AT&T, but I was able to sell my ($600 new/$100 refurb/$145 with contract) phone for $300. I guess you can say that my iPhone cost me $300. Now I just need to look around the house to see what else I can sell to make it FREE :p

You think it' a good idea for me to go to an ATT store and let them know I returned my iPhone (which I won't) and that I would like to get a free phone instead and RE-activate the contract?

No one has an answer? :(

AT&T doesn't care if you returned your iPhone or not. All they care about is if you cancelled your AT&T contract or not. You cant fool them on that. Even if you do cancel your contract with AT&T, your not considered a new customer until 60 days after you cancel your contract .

One thing i'm still not clear on, because I've read it both ways.

Can you use the SIM card from the iPhone in another 3G phone?

I'm currently an AT&T customer whose 2 year contract just ended.

What I was kind of hoping to do was get a slim 3G phone like a Samsung A717 or Razr V3XX, and then get an iPhone, and use the iPhone primarily, but take the SIM out of the iPhone from time to time and use it with the A717 or V3xx when I wanted to carry a regular phone around.

I had previously read that the SIM from the iPhone wouldn't work in other phones, so this plan wouldn't work, but now I've read that maybe this does work.

I'm currently waiting for my two Nokia's to arrive (free) from Amazon so I can hook them up and then hook up my iPhones. It's killing me with these iPhone bricks just sitting here.

Well I read that the SIM from iPhone works on other phones but not reciprocally. So I guess in your case, you should be fine.

I've read several threads in passing where people are swapping between the iPhone and some 3G smartphone also (using an "iPhone" SIM). I tried to do a forum search to find a good thread to discuss it in, but I had a hard time finding them again.

There was *one* thread in which someone had swapped and done something like changing their voicemail to default to the other handset or something like that (I didn't totally understand what it was that had been done), and the result was that the iPhone started behaving strangely (no data services, many other things not working), leading to a saga of eventually getting a new iPhone. But that's the only one I've seen that reported anything like that.

Keep in mind that most "free" phones you get with a contract renewal require you to pay and then submit a mail-in rebate. You may or may not see your money in 3 months or so.

I got $100 off my iPhone. I had called in to lodge a complaint about the number of issues my macbook was having, namely that I had to have the iSight replaced twice, and after listening they gave me a $100 off ecoupon which I used on the iPhone. I had to wait to have my shipped but it was worth it.

anyone do this recently?

Hi. Just resurrecting this thread to seek out recent switchers and their experiences along these lines.
What phone did you get and resell? Where there any contract issues in switching to a cheaper iPhone plan from something like a Treo or Blackberry or getting rebates on the original phone?

I'm now about three weeks from the end of my Sprint contract. I've had my my iPhone since mid-July and have been enjoying its iPod and Safari features. One day, it'll be a Phone, too.

Thanks and happy holiday!

Anybody have any luck getting a free phone after buying the iPhone but still within the 14-day period? I just got my iPhone a couple days ago and wouldn't mind some ebay money to go towards it. What exactly do you ask for when you go into the store and do the CSR's know what you're up to?

I did this..but worried

I got a Blackberry Curve from amazon for $70.00 after I renewed my contract with them as a current ATT customer...I then sold it on craigslist for $350 within hours. I immediately activated the blackberry phone, and then activated my iphone soon there after. There was nothing on the website a month ago that said anything about not doing this. That was until now. I looked at their website now and it states 5 rules which must be adhered to so that they don't charge your credit card for $250. The most explicit I believe was that the device can not be used on another phone line for 180 days. So I'm a little worried now, and would definitely not recommend doing this from a third party retailer. Anyone have any insight on this?

I'm sort of bouncing between two options:
Start a 2yr contract with a $49 (after rebate) 3G phone and keep it, then sell it an upgrade to iphone.
Or
Do the same thing, except with a Blackberry Pearl and sell it, then upgrade to an iphone.

Thing is, there isn't any 3G (yet?) in my immediate area. So do I get the cheap phone or the pearl until a new iphone comes out? I'm kinda holding out.

So confused.
