2006 1,1 Mac Pro RAM issues

So if anyone else wants to order 2GB modules from OWC for their 1,1 Mac Pro, what do we need to do to ensure we don't have the same problem you did? What would you suggest?

wow, so the new ram is ok then? I am baffled, I had my doubts the new stuff they were sending you would work. I live in Canada and had them ship the ram to my mailbox just across the border. I don't want to have to keep playing the game of going over to pickup, going back over to ship back! Well, I am glad it worked out for you anyways.

I had 12 gig I had ordered...6x 2 gig modules. I am now reading that its better to have 4 dimms or 8 dimms (and of course I have six dimms)....what does everyone suggest? I still have my original 2x 1gig pair. Can I install them with my new 12 gig 6x 2gig (once I get it sorted out of course?)

Depends on how much memory you need. If you populate all 8 slots, you pay a latency penalty (inherent in FB-DIMM technology), but can make use of more memory in total. If you only populate 4 slots, you hit sweet the sweet spot but are limited in max memory. People do argue whether the penalty would be noticable in normal every-day-use.

Another issue worth mentioning is the increased power consumption and heat dissipation with all 8 slots populated (heat is no problem for the MP, however the fans might spin a little higher).

Yes - you can install them together with the new modules.

Yeah the new RAM is working great

I am assuming that OWC either had bad RAM or it wasn't the right RAM for the 1,1.

I am sure your experience should be a good one. If not a replacement may fix the issue
