Many thanks Zarniwoop and Hennesie2000 for this thread - I have had the parts and have been waiting for some spare time to have a go at this using the Boot.efi method on my old Mac Pro 1,1. Happy to say it all worked perfectly this morning, the boot.efi instructions worked perfectly.

I ran a first pass install from my late 2008 MacBook onto an SSD via USB and then booted the Mac Pro straight up. I'm running Yosemite at the moment and I'll probably stay that way for a while. Next job is to read up on restoring the machine following an app store update.

Have also upgraded my hardware to 2 x5365 plus a Radeon AMD 7950 - runs very nicely.

Really appreciate your efforts on this, thanks again.

Radeon AMD 7950 how is this running on a Mac Pro 1.1 and if so is it without the apple icon on boot as in a black screen?

Using just the DVI port right now to a single panel and get the grey apple icon at start up towards the end of the boot I get a black screen with a progress bar in the bottom left corner.

I'm moving house soon after I've moved I'll probably buy a Phillips 40" 4K panel and hook it up to the display port.

I bought the card pre flashed from morquidcomputers - it was a little expensive but came with all the features I wanted.

For different reasons I’m still running Mavericks (with Tiamos original hack on my MacPro 1.1, without any problems since 2013). But for every security update I’m have a little worries that Apple will switch back to the default boot.efi.
Now I realized there is a solution built for Yosemite that will automate the replacement of the boot.efi if that happens:
https://forums.macrumors.com/thread...d-os-x-yosemite.1740775/page-87#post-20533461

Does anyone knows if this script will work on Macvericks?

It's called "TiamoMacProFix" and you'll find it in Mavericks thread. But you can safely assume that any future update won't replace the boot.efi because only major updates (i.e. 10.9.x – and not all of them) were doing this.

Ok, thanks. These threads are so long that it's impossible to browse trough them and read everything.

Hello to all...
Hopefully I posted this correctly...

Hoping that no one else is having this challenge, but would love to know what I am doing wrong...
Trying to get El Capitan running on a 2006...
Have used a 2008 to upgrade OS X from 10.7.5 to El Capitan on the 1,1 hard drive...
When I do to the suggested methods of changing the file flags on "boot.efi" I get
"chflags is not permitted" or something similar (sorry getting a bit tired and frustrated)

Since the file "boot.efi" resides in the folder /System/Library/CoreServices I have been using this command in terminal...

sudo chflags nouchg /System/Library/CoreServices/boot.efi

This is from the "Guide for Installing Yosemite on a Mac Pro 1,1 or 2,1"
Any ideas would be appreciated

I have a problem. I'm getting the question mark folder on boot.

I've been running Yosemite on Mac Pro 1,1 for months without problems. Disabled all updates.

I boot to the install USB I created to replace the boot.efi.
When I go to terminal both /Library and /System appear empty on the system drive. Any ideas?

I modified the script and Tobyg's package with Pike's fork of boot.efi.
I hope that tobyg won't mind this.

Above steps are no longer needed with updated version. Enjoy!

Credits go to Pike and Tobyg and of course to tiamo, who started this all.
Boot.efi inside the 1st package is black version.

Updated the post with gray version for these who prefer older look.
It's Hennessie's build from post #1616, black is mine from latest version of Pike's sources.

Used Carbon Copy Cloner in a MacBook Pro copied to a thumb drive then used Lion on the destination Mac Pro and restored to the 2nd partition , replaced both boot.efi but in the core services folder had to delete by cli, then blessed the folder.

I want to add USB 3.0 ports to my mcp 1,1 now running Yosemite - from memory the majority of the pcie add on boards support the 2008 model onwards. There is a USB 3.0 pcie board for the 2006 but it's very pricey.

I was reading the sticky at the beginning of this thread and found something quite interesting at the bottom

< Note also that the 2006/2007 Mac Pro has PCIe 1.1 expansion slots, with the bottom double-wide slot capable of being configured to use a maximum 2.5 GT/s link speed when configured as a x16 lane graphics slot. Yosemite's Expansion Slot Utility, located in /System/Library/Core Services, supports the 2006-2007 Mac Pro to configure the number of lanes available in each slot. PCIe 2.0/3.0 cards that can run at 5.0 GT/s link speed in 2008-2012 Mac Pros can work in 2006/2007 Mac Pros, but only with a PCIe 1.1 maximum 2.5 GT/s link speed.>

Does this mean I can fit the cheaper usb3.0 interface for 2008my+ in my 1,1?

I had a PCIe USB 3.0 card in my MacPro1,1. It worked fine but some devices would cause it to freeze on boot when plugged into it. I believe mine was a 4 port card from Orico.

This is it: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00GG5GMJQ/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_awd_L-yexb1NW42Q0

Thanks :) one of users over on the USB 3.0 thread is using the inateck 4004 cards. Might give that a go as it's available here.

What device types caused freezes?

I honestly don't remember. It has been a yr and a half since I used it. I sold the card after my MP1,1 died.

Format the drive as HFS+ Journaled. FAT32 has a files size limit of 4GB. Also, if you are trying to build the installer you do not want to save the dmg to the driver, you want to restore it.

Use disk utility. If you follow the instructions posted at the top of the original post there is a how to on building the installer from scratch but it also covers restoring a disk image.

2007 Mac Pro 2,1 9GB ram hd5770:
this weekend I installed Yosemite using the prepackaged Yosemite Installer.dmg from this thread. I thought my otherwise 64-bit beast of an old mac was becoming obsolete because of some silly 32-bit boot file until I found this thread so a huge thanks to everyone for all their hard work, I've spent quite a bit of time reading through all the posts.

all is working well except that I can't install OS X updates via app store or installer dmgs.

I have tried 10.10.1, 10.10.2 (combo), and 10.10.5 (combo from the app store and using a downloaded dmg).

system also fails to boot to the recovery drive via cmd-R or opt-boot, instead goes straight to Yosemite login (not a big deal as I have recovery media to boot from).

found one other person in the thread with the same update issues, but their problem solved itself and so far I've had no luck. I'd really like to get 10.10.5 running as I don't have the resources to try an El Capitan install yet.

when I install an update the progress bar zips by in half a second and then it tells me the update is complete and to restart my computer.

is it something to do with the fact that I haven't 'purchased' a copy of Yosemite through the App store? (this is the only mac I own so was never able to download the installer from the store under my own account)

iTunes updated fine once I downloaded it from the website, but it did the same thing through the app store update, just a flash of progress bar and then update completed and listed as an installed update... then the next time I check for updates it pops back up. sometimes the app store won't even retrieve update data at all and gives me an error.

anyone have similar issues with updating? I've tried pre and post the YoseFix script with same results. permissions and hard disk seem fine. safe mode had same results.

I'm fairly new to this, so apologies if I'm an idiot.

thanks-
