you may be right on the technical point but it just work. i can make you a screenshot of system profiler. my 1.1 upgraded 2.1, with el cap special install work with r9 380 4go

Maybe this is a misunderstanding.

The problem is:

MP3,1 Xeon don't have SSE4.2. So any AMD GPUs driver after 10.13 don't work with 2008 Mac Pros.

MP1,1/2,1 don't have SSE4.2 too, but since they don't have SSE3, they can't run anything newer than 10.11.6.

im surprised people are recommending a GTX 680 to a MP1,1/2,1 user

as those are EFI64 cards and the MP1,1/2,1 is EFI32 so even if you flash a GTX 680 you wont get boot screens

the best card with Boot Screens you can put into a MP1,1/2,1 is a Mac edition/Flashed AMD Radeon 7950/R9 280 or AMD Radeon HD 7970/R9 280X

I was thinking they were asking about a 3,1 which was why I recommended the 680.

I ran an ATI 5870 in my 2,1 for some time. It did a great job and worked well.

for more infor about the netkas script effet on different marque amd cards, tested on non pirated system:
asus 280/280x works on dvi + displayport, hdmi and second dvi won't work
asus 7950/7970 will work on dvi + 2x mini dp, hdmi doesn't work, good to connect 2 cinema display
asus 7970 the 6 ports version: 2x dvi + 4x displayport, only one dvi and one displayport work on mac after flashed
sapphire 280/280X/7950/7970 has toooooo many differents cards, but they may be devised by two types: the version has 3 silver plastique between two fans, one of their dual x version, and all others;
the silver plastique version works with three ports: dvi+hdmi+dp, the others will work only on dvi and displayport, like asus the hdmi will not work on mac, neither under mac os nor windows, but you have second rom works perfectly without boot screen like other amd cards
gigabyte 280/7950 works on dvi + 2x mini dp, hdmi will not work
gigabyte 280X/7970 works on all four video ports perfectly including hdmi 4k
msi 7950/7970 will work like gigabyte 280, dvi+ 2x mini dp, the hdmi will not work
msi 280/280X works perfectly like gigabyte 280x, four video ports activated on mac

tested also a lot other marques'/lable/subvendors' amd cards, worked most like asus: when it has two dvi, there is always one doesn't work, the hdmi will not work, but mini display and display port will work, no matter it is 7950/7970/280/280X, all same, so basicly, except i mentioned above msi and gigabyte, i've not found another one work with hdmi, if anyone find new or find mistake here please give a feedback, thank you.
