The Sapphire Pulse RX 580 is the one Apple Recommends.
There are reports of some other brands working well and some brands that do not.
Hey, New to this thread and community. I purchased an Radeon RX 580 Sapphire pulse from OWC in an open box and they sent me a XFX rx580 gts black edition OC. They tried to tell me they are basically the same. I have a hard time believing they are since I see a very mixed review of running the xfx on Mac pro 5,1 builds. I cannot get any video response whatsoever. I am running a 2009 4,1 flashed to 5,1 running high sierra
2 x 2.3Ghz intel core i3 (have 2 delidded 3.33Ghz ready to install)
running open core vs 061
16gb ram
ATI Radeon hd 4870 - OLD GRAPHICS CARD WORKS -
New one the xfx rx580 gts black edition DOES NOT WORK

I am planning on returning and trying to find a sapphire pulse...8gb. This is my last ditch effort to see if
a) there is a workaround for this card, somehow...someway
b) if it is worth it in the longrun...and the amount of time it would take to get this newbie off the ground in this build

Any HELP or direction is appreciated. Thanks

If you purchase from OWC, you better contact them for RMA.

You are pretty much paid for their marketing and CS, not the product. Don't waste it.

If your problem is just "can't get the boot screen via OpenCore", then it usually can be fixed by downloading another RX580 ROM, and flash the card. However, specifically for XFX RX580, even you flash it, still has high chance that the colour is wrong in boot screen.

If your problem is that "the card display nothing at all in High Sierra", then you have to RMA it, or ask for refund.

Since they can refuse your RMA and refund request, therefore, flash the card isn't a good option for you at this moment.

Therefore, in either case, you still better ask for full refund.

I haven't read their RX580 page. But unless they clearly says they may send you any brand / any model's RX580, IMO, they should send you exactly what you purchased for. And you have the right to ask them to send you the exact product.

"XFX RX580 is basically the same as PULSE RX580" is completely BS.

If they insist, ask them to send you a XFX RX580 that has a part number 113-4E353BU-O4E or 113-4E3531U-O4V. So that macOS will assign Orinoco Framebuffer to the card natively.

There is a reason why the PULSE RX580 is so special. It's the card that being used in the Apple eGPU kit. The OS has special treatment to this card.

On the other hand XFX is really just producing card's for Windows PC. I personally don't hate XFX, I am also using the XFX Radeon VII. However, Radeon VII is a special case, there is no after market options, all Radeon VIIs are reference cards.

For RX580, some XFX can't even work on the cMP, obviously that's NOT basically the same as the PULSE RX580, especially that's not you ordered.

Don't let them escape. Either force them to send you the exact card you ordered, or keep RMA until they send you a card that can work 100% as per the PULSE (including can display correctly in OpenCore boot picker).

h9826790 Thank you for taking the time to reply with tons of knowledge and quotable nuggets on my second call with OWC. They did give the go-ahead for an RMA but were haggling me over the shipping cost back. I kindly sent them an email letting them know that they pulled a bait and switch on me and requested a full and complete refund. I would definitely take an exchange for what I actually ordered if granted. I suspect they will grant the refund and move on. I am on a waiting list for BH Photo video for the sapphire pulse. Thank you again for your help, it is much appreciated.
