2010 iMac 27inch Screen glow issues fixed?

I posted before stating that I had a large glow coming from the bottom right of my screen. So I sent my new Imac back to Apple for them to investigate. They sent me another iMac that was BTO that came back with the same issue.

Well they just had a chance to look at my first iMac. What they said is that the screen was screwed in too tight and the issue can be fixed by having someone in store at the Genius bar to loosen the display so it is only lightly tightened.

I guess this is fantastic news for myself and others. I am taking my iMac in tonight to have them adjust it. They must have some heavy handed people in the factory. Hopefully I can post some before and after pictures later tonight!

i have the same issue, and they gave me the same solution, only its a massive ballache for me to take my 27" into an apple store 30 miles from my house

Yes, I agree. Hopefully it does get fixed. They said they fixed my first one. This would explain why there are more BTO 27 iMacs having this problem. If this is fixed I will be the happiest person in the world.

Well you could always ship the iMac to them. FedEx will pick it up.

Totally different issue that surfaced with the new iMacs. No Yellow tint on the 2 iMacs I received. Just the screen glow problem.

Meaning if this little fix actually works, then I will have a perfect working iMac without any Display issue. I don't like spending 4k on an iMac and have visible flaws.

And this was a NEW iMac, directly from Apple?

Sorry, couldn't resist this one, but it is quite sad, when we have to dismantle and adjust a brand new, brand name product coming straight from the manufacturer's box and the irony of this is lost on us.

I really hope this will solve the problem for you though.

Yes, this is a new iMac bought from Apple's store online that was built to order.

My i7 had just about ZERO back bleed.

Had some bad yellow tint, but a significant gray band on the bottom.

So, I at least know that they can fix (or you can at least get one without) the back bleed issue. Mine did not have it.

Well I went to the Apple store.. First off, wow.. What a madhouse that place is.. Way too many people. Well the so called Genius couldn't fix the issue. He followed all instructions and actually made the screen worst off than it was. Now I have wider bleed and yellow has sprung up on my screen.

If the original assembler really torqued down those screws hard it is possible to do permanent damage to the screen. If backing off the screws didn't help then you may have damage severe enough to be permanent. Probably time to send it back to Apple for a new display. Again.

thats terrible!!! Was really hoping that would fix it! But admit i was a bit doubtful. Especially when those geniuses are involved. haha.

So what next- another replacement or money back? Good luck with it. Sucks the problems we have to go thru

Never ever take anything to a Genius bar. I am gonna have them take this iMac, and I will spend a few grand more getting a MacPro. At least I can still use my 30 inch Dell display. Well I really did try hard. The machine is fantastic, but the display is not what they advertise on the 2 iMacs. What sucks is that this imac sliced into my finger while I was putting it back in the box. Almost need stiches.

Wow, this blows! Sorry to hear about all the issues. I have "only" had one screen issue (so far? ) and now that I traded up to a 27" iMac, I'm in love with the screen! Having said that, I'm also on my third iMac because my audio out port doesn't work that great.

I, too, am sick of driving back and forth to the Apple Store to get one iMac after another. I refuse to give up, though, as there are so many people who love their iMac's and do not have these issues, so I'll just go back and forth for as long as it takes and force them to give up one brand new iMac after another.

It *is* sad, however, but I am super grateful that I decided to get mine locally, so as to be able to get another one whenever I feel like it. I can't be without my computer for even a day or two. I simply don't care to be without one even if my job didn't depend on it. Not what I expected from Apple.

Really? I'd give 'em one more chance. I have a 27" iMac now and I'm about to trade up to a Quad later this week or early next, even though my screen is PERFECT! I mean stunning! I'm in love with the design, and if I don't stop myself, I'll go on and on being excited about my first Mac in 17 years!

I'm also a little apprehensive about it, as the only thing that's really an issue with it is the audio jack, which is a tad on the "loose" side.

I'm going to FREAK if there is ANYTHIONG, but ANYTHING wrong with the 27" display on my next iMac. ONE dead pixel and it's going back for another one. ONE lousy little white spot and it's going back for yet another one. The SLIGHTEST little blemish and I'm driving back over there and throw it back at the Apple staff which had better have another NEW one READY BY THE DOOR for me, so that I won't be inconvenienced with having to look for a damn parking space.

I want to have said this again. I am in LOVE with this gorgeous iMac. No, really!

plus some small glows on the other corners. gonna bring it to the apple store on staturday for them to look at.

I have the same problem i just got my replacement today as my first imac had dead pixels.

This one has a white glow on the right hand corner. The other corners glow but not as bad. I watch a lot of movies and I've tried a few tonight but they are washed out in the lower right corner.

I cant be bothered getting this picked up and replaced again. I'm not sure what to do

Oh man, I'm sorry to hear that, guys! You know, I'm SO glad...SO glad...that I didn't get it from anywhere other than a LOCAL store. To put this in perspective, 1994 was the last time that I bought a computer in a local electronics store as opposed to having it shipped to me from someone on ebay or an online store, such as store.apple.com Now that's making me feel old. Thanks a lot, Apple.

Anyway, if either of you, and/or anyone else reading this and wanting to share in the love, have gotten this shipped to you and you live in an area that's not too far from an Apple store, I would get my money back and buy it locally from an Apple store. I NEVER thought in my wildest dreams when I walked out of my own local Apple store, excited about my purchase of an iMac, that I would be on my third iMac only 5 weeks later and posting about it like this. Add to that the fact that I'm getting my FOURTH one this weekend or early next week.

I will NOT give up, though. I love the design and I'm getting a killer deal from Apple, so there WILL be a Quad-core iMac i7 on my desk, fully functional and without any issues next week, no matter how many iMac's I will have to blow through. Mind you that I will inspect each and everyone as though I am LOOKING to find a problem with them. The screen being the most important part and I have the perfect 27" screen right now. Nothing other than another PERFECT screen will do. Nothing! Hey, I live in L.A., and there are plenty of Apple stores here, so I can just switch to another one if the manager of the one I've been patronizing decides that he doesn't want to play anymore, I have actually found another Apple store that's *closer* to me, so let's rock. I'll even shoot some videos and upload them to YouTube so you can all see what I'm talking about. Steve-oh will get a link emailed to him as well.

EDIT: Guess what, haha, I can go in as early as later tonight to get me that iMac quad-Core i7 with that perfect screen.

All reviews I've read thus far that have tested mid-2010 iMac screens with actual calibration software indicate color irregularities at around ~5%, but that's not the question in my opinion. You'll be (very) hard pressed to find one with a 100% perfect screen, if that's even possible. You'll be hard pressed even regardless brand. For a 27"-30" IPS panel with minimal irregularities, you're moving into Eizo territory. Be prepared to pay $2000-3000+ for the screen alone.

The question, with iMacs, is whether you'll find a screen you'll put up with. If it's a very good build, you'll barely see anything at all, and if you put up with that, you'll just have saved yourself $1000 compared to if you would've bought a pro screen, which the iMac screen isn't. It's more like, uh, a prosumer variant. Hell, it doesn't even support the Adobe RGB color space, which should be telling if anything.

I have personally realized this, and is despite this interested in an iMac, since I'm not a professional photographer who demand the most perfect quality on the market. iMac doesn't lead the market here -- other brands do -- but iMac does lead the market in All-in-one-computers, and if you're looking for this and/or OS X as a prosumer, then this system is the right one for you. If you're a pro, I can recommend the new Mac Pro models with a dedicated professional LCD.

I am sorry to hear about others having the same screen issue. That screen is so fragile that BTO iMacs without corner glow is going to be almost impossible. The fact the screen got worst for me when a Genius bar staff member adjusted it doesn't help my faith in Apple. If something else went wrong down the line, and they had to remove the screen, I doubt it would ever be the same again. Too bad you can't get BTO iMacs a the store, but the Apple stores in Los Angeles are a circus anyways. I really hate crowds and parking in LA. Some people can live with it, but not me. I can't be bothered by having my corners that lifted in the black levels. It's a fantastic machine otherwise. I wish they could get it right, but that's not the case. 2 returns is my limit. I can't be, and shouldn't be bothered with such a hassle of constantly returning a machine. If I am spending 4,200.00 for an iMac, it better be perfect.

So instead of paying 6k for a Mac Pro, I am gonna spend 6k on a Level 10 ibuypower.com PC loaded up beyond what Apple could sell a machine for, and install OSX on it. I really only care to use Logic Pro, and Aperture so hopefully all goes well. At least I won't have to worry about the display.

Wow, now I'm really worried. I'm about to sign off and pack this thing up to get my Core i7 iMac. The store that I go to (and yes, they are a zoo in L.A. at seemingly whatever time I go in) and I will hopefully get another "perfect" screen. By "perfect", I obviously meant to the naked eye. My screen has nothing wrong with it (pound on wood!) and I'm quite picky as far as screen quality goes. For example, if it wasn't an IPS screen at over 300nits, I wouldn't even bother. Then again, it's so bright that I can hardly look at it at full brightness. The black levels are great, too. Having said that, let's see if I'll be talking about my next iMac the same way.

I believe LG makes the screens for Apple's iMac's. The crowd I ran with for the last decade, i.e. fellow IBM/Lenovo ThinkPad owners, always seemed happiest when they received a ThinkPad with an LG panel, as opposed to a Samsung. My last screen was an S-IPS AFFS display from Hydis (formerly BOE-Hydis). That was perhaps the single most gorgeous screen that I have ever had the pleasure of working with.

Alright, I'm off to the...gulp...Apple store. Wish me luck, folks. Looks like I could use some.
